On second day of Newark summit, star-studded panel discusses achieving peace through education -pics

Actress Goldie Hawn gestures as she sits between long-time Newark educator and school administrator Anzella King Nelms, right, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, second right, and James Shelton, left, with the US Department of Education, during a Peace In Education panel discussion Saturday, May 14, 2011, in Newark, N.J. The three-day summit on the power of nonviolence will include Nobel laureates, international leaders, local anti-violence activists and Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

Violent crime is up in Newark and other New Jersey cities this year, and some are blaming it on recent police layoffs that are becoming commonplace across the country.

"This is a city that needs peace, that is crying out for peace," said Pedro Noguera, an NYU professor who has worked closely with Newark schools for the last three years. "The kind of education that is needed has to be thought through because education does not necessarily lead to peace."

Noguera was touching on a theme that the Dalai Lama has been touting since his arrival.

"From kindergarten, we have to teach whenever there is conflict, teaching the use of force is the wrong method. It brings mutual destruction," the Dalai Lama said. "Whenever there is conflict the immediate thought in our mind should be how to solve this through dialog, instead of how to solve this through force."
