The Yomiuri ShimbunResidents of Kawamatamachi and Iitatemura, both in Fukushima Prefecture, began evacuating Sunday to avoid high-level radiation from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
All of Iitatemura and parts of Kawamatamachi were designated as evacuation zones last month.
On Sunday, farewell ceremonies were held in both municipalities. In Kawamatamachi, representatives of eight households participated in a ceremony at a community center in the Yamakiya district. They received relief goods, such as blankets and keys to the places where they will stay.
"We'll do our best to provide the same environment
as here, where people can raise children and grow old without anxiety," Mayor Michio Furukawa said.
Some residents began moving to municipal apartments in the city, located in areas that are not designated as evacuation zones. About 1,200 residents in Kawamatamachi will evacuate from their homes.
