Seattle officer suspended 30 days for epithet

A Seattle police detective who was caught on video last year using anti-Mexican language while detaining a Latino man can keep his job but will be suspended 30 days without pay, officials said Thursday.

Police Chief John Diaz said he initially preferred to fire veteran Detective Shandy Cobane but was advised the dismissal likely would not stand up to appeals available under the contract with the police guild.

The chief, though, warned the presumptive punishment going forward for officers who use racial or ethnic slurs will be termination.

The video shows Seattle police officers stomping on the head and body of one man. At one point, Cobane approaches one of the men and can be heard saying: "You got me? I'm going to beat the (expletive) Mexican (expletive) out of you homey. You feel me?"

4. If I remember correctly, on top of everything else, the person the cop

was assaulting was an innoent bystander guilty only of the "crime" of breathing while Hispanic.
