Prayer request for Osama bin Laden at Catholic Church in West Palm Beach
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The name of Osama bin Laden appears in the Holy Name of Jesus Sunday bulletin. There's a cross next to it.

A parishioner made a prayer request for the mastermind behind the 9/11 attack on America.

A church secretary took the Mass intention a week ago. She admitted she thought it was a joke at first. But few are laughing.

...

Father Gavin Badway admits many in his congregation are unhappy. But he says the church has never turned down a prayer request before. He says making the right decision isn't always easy.

"Their hearts are troubled because they're thinking emotionally about what he has done and he has done a lot of evil. Nevertheless, Jesus tells us, love and forgive," says Father Badway, who is the church pastor.

1. Do good to those that hate you--Matthew 5-44
Praying for Osama sounds Christian to me.

3. They are following the teachings of the church and I admire them for that. It's not
always easy to do. This is a good example of that.

4. I wonder if they ever did prayer requests for the victims of their bishops--
The new name, like the new bishop, reflects a tumultuous year in the Palm Beach diocese. On March 8, 2002, Bishop Anthony J. O’Connell resigned following publication of an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that reported O’Connell had engaged in sexual improprieties with a seminarian more than 25 years earlier. O’Connell’s swift resignation was the second of a bishop in Palm Beach. His predecessor, Bishop Keith Symons, left the Palm Beach diocese in 1998 when it was revealed that he had sexually abused five young men earlier in his career.

Here in Palm Beach, the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic church has been hard to miss, impossible to ignore. With not one but two bishops removed for sexual abuse, local Catholics have come face to face with the scandal in ways that Catholics in some other dioceses have not. The fallout is still settling; the taking of stock ongoing.
