Michigan man on food stamps despite winning $2 million in lottery (w/video)
And the jerk has the audacity to complain about government taking taxes from him - while still using food stamps! Sounds like a typical tea partier; he's got his and will take all he can for himself; those truly in need can no doubt go to hell.

Anyway:

AUBURN, Mich. -- A man who won $2 million on a Michigan lottery show has told TV5 that he still uses food stamps.

Leroy Fick of Bay County admitted he still swipes the electronic card at stores, nearly a year after winning a jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" He told TV5's Bill Walsh that more than half the prize went to taxes.

Fick said the Department of Human Services told him he could continue to use the card, which is paid with Michigan tax dollars.

"If you're going to ... try to make me feel bad, you aren't going to do it," said Fick.

Neighbor's told TV5 that they have seen Fick driving a new Audi convertible.

4. Sounds like a typical CEO - grab all you can get
Especially if it's legal.

Citibank should be scouting this guy for upper management. He has the right attitude.

8. He will only end up owing whatever the normal income tax would be.
He could end up getting a refund, depending on the income tax levels in the state.

6. The state should have canceled his card.
People will always take advantage of the system. But why is the state enabling it?

that food stamp recipients are lazy malingerers.

9. I didn't listen to the video. Did that give more information?
I'm not seeing his political affiliation there in the print version anyway. I agree he should not be using the card. It should go to someone who truly needs it. In fact, if I had won the lottery, not only would I have been happy to pay the taxes on it, but I would have looked into some way of repaying the state for the help they gave me when I needed it.

I just don't see how we are going to make it as a society if every single person is just out for all they can get for themselves and no one cares about anyone else. There ought to be more morals in this society besides just "make as much money as you can, any way you can." There ought to be morals about paying back a debt when someone else has helped you. There ought to be pride in paying the taxes that go to pay for the soldiers everyone says they admire, in paying for the roads that help this nation remain great, and all the other things that go into a strong healthy democracy.

My husband and I have talked about this, too. We are both fine with a tax increase, if one is needed to balance the budget. It's been a time of war for quite a few years now and war requires us to make sacrifices. One of those sacrifices is coming up with the money to pay for the wars.

11. i agree with you that we ought to be more community minded
but i fear that capitalism breeds this attitude.
the system requires that we store up more than we need during our working lives so that we can survive when we can't work.
there is very little wiggle room for most of us.
generosity threatens our survival.

13. I could make a million $ last the rest of my life
Barring some horrible illness.

No sympathy for this assclown.

And his actions only undermine political support for a program that a vast many people need. He provides political ammunition to the people who say the whole program should be ended.

15. WTF?!? He no longer qualifies for food stamps!
The income limits for food stamps are so low, his POCKET CHANGE exceeds them.

MI's Dept. of Economic Security needs to get off their butts and cancel that EBT card immediately.

22. It's not just taxes
The advertised jackpot is based on the 20- or even 26-year payouts. The lump sum is quite a bit less. Then there are the taxes.

What doesn't sound right is how someone could blow that much dough.

24. That's a little high but I don't know Michigan...
When you win one of these multimillion-dollar jackpots, normally half goes to you and half to the government.

It looks to me like the state also skimmed off an amount equal to his lifetime EBT benefit...so since he paid for it I'd let the dumb SOB keep it.

18. The way that lottery payouts work he probably won't be "rich" by the time its all over...

My brother in law's grandmother hit a $100,000 lottery jackpot. From what I understand, she paid off what she owed on her house (which wasn't much) bought a new Ford Taurus, a big screen TV, and a trip to Dollywood. That was about all her lottery winnings would buy. From what I understand she's still living paycheck to paycheck on social security and probably food stamps too.

20. Watching the video now... seems like another James O'Keefe "investigative report"

And this guy seems suspiciously not to have any shame or explanation for what he's doing. Its almost like he's complying with the reporter to push an anti-foodstamp/social welfare agenda.

26. I don't see it that way at all.
It's clear from the video that he's anti-tax and complaining about taxation on his winnings. The news station is legit. I don't see this as anti-food stamps, I see him as pro-greed. Sounds like a tea partier to me.
