Dedicated to Bobby Troup and California Peggy: Route 66 (all photos 5/17)
Well if you ever plan to motor west
Just take my way that's the highway that's the best
Get your kicks on Route 66

Well it winds from Chicago to L.A.
More than 2000 miles all the way
Get your kicks on Route 66

Well goes from St. Louie down to Missouri
Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty
You'll see Amarillo and Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona don't forget Winona
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino

Would you get hip to this kindly tip
And go take that California trip
Get your kicks on Route 66

Well goes from St. Louie down to Missouri
Oklahoma city looks oh so pretty
You'll see Amarillo and Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona don't forget Winona
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino

Would you get hip to this kindly tip
And go take that California trip
Get your kicks on Route 66

10. Nick is now in the beddie-bye
We are in a great hotel along I-40 in Kingman: the Marriott Spring Hill Suites. I don't normally gush about brand-name digs, but I do like this Spring Hill. With it's hanging pocket-like doors and translucent room dividers, the designers take a long narrow room and make it feel much .. what? .. non-motel-room-like. Actually better: European.

I always get a room with two queens, if I can. One for my camera gear and bags, and one for Nick and me.

Thursday I'll be in Las Vegas. Dr. DemoTex has a room at a fancy casino (MGM Grand). Nick and I have a room at a cheap La Quinta ($66/night). We reserve visitation rights both ways.

OK....by a few miles, but there you go!

In Eugene.

Looks like you're taking the scenic route, that's for sure.

Safe drive, man.

Truckers are the best rides, so many good stories. (No worries if you didn't I'm just wondering.)

17. Nope: the truck cab, although a 4-door, is 100% packed ..
Nick's kennel cage takes up 55% of the back seat, and I pack daily use bags on the other side. Camera gear that I might need goes in the passenger-side floor-board. A cardboard flat from Costco goes on the passenger seat with CD holders, snacks, etc.

19. As a pre-teen in the early 50s, I traveled Route 66 to California ...
... with my parents. Absolutely EVERY refrain in the song invokes memories of the vistas and adventures we encountered on that trip. We made the trip at the pinnacle of the westward migration along Route 66 seeking the opportunities for a "better life" in California. It'd be beyond impossible for me to convey the sense of those times to the second cohort of the baby boom (who never faced the draft) and later... BEFORE Elvis, BEFORE Disneyland, BEFORE Mickey Mouse Club ... when "I Like Ike" was a mantra and the country was enjoying a "peace dividend" (and Korea was a "police action") and seeing the world open up to a whole array of new experiences.

It should be noted that Route 66's hey-day preceded the ubiquitous air-conditioned businesses and residences of the southwest ... when it was extraordinary enough to merit prominent signage. Somehow, we didn't seem to think it was all that essential ... until we did.

Those were the days when gas stations "competed" in offering the BEST maps ... and *I* was the trip navigator. I took on my role very seriously. (My love for good maps has survived to this day.)

Thank you for the pictures of Route 66. Brings back memories of my trip along the Route. There were 5 of us in 2 cars. A '54 Ford and a VW Camper. We stayed on the old alignment even when it was parallel to the freeway. We were camped outside of Santa Fe when we heard about the attacks on NY and DC. The trip became pretty odd after that. We talked with people who were stuck because of canceled flights, met people who decided to drive to their destinations, and met an Indian woman who told us of her aged mother's views after the attacks. So for me, Route 66 and 9/11 will forever be entwined.
