Ibaraki fishermen demand Y425 mil in damages from TEPCO
Tokyo

A Japanese fisheries cooperative federation in Ibaraki Prefecture is demanding 425 million yen in damages from Tokyo Electric Power Co on Wednesday to compensate for their losses stemming from radioactive leaks from the utility’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The federation of fisheries cooperative association of Ibaraki maritime district said the amount covers damages incurred by some 460 fishermen of the association, including lost revenues from suspended fishing activities in March as a result of the leaks.

The federation is the first group of Japanese fishermen to seek damages from TEPCO in connection with radiation leaks from the plant that was crippled in the wake of the March 11 mega earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

Isao Ono, deputy chief of the fisheries federation, made the demand in a meeting with Naomi Hirose, TEPCO’s managing director in charge of compensating people affected by the nuke accident, at the utility’s head office in Tokyo.
