Private grief and Facebook - we had a young woman found dead with her baby -

apparently no crime involved - and friends spread the news to each other via Facebook. At the time, there was no official identification because the police weren't certain all family members had been notified. Some questioned whether putting the news up on Facebook was a good idea in the first place - what if some family member had seen the news there first? But this morning, the real hazard became apparent when a local TV station was using Facebook to contact (harass?) people trying to get the whole story first.

There are ways to make things fairly private on Facebook, and if people don't do this, the press will use it as a resource.

ETA: I mean, to say "private grief" with regards to Facebook is, unfortunately, laughable.

2. I meant the posting as an additional warning that what goes up on the

Net does not remain private or within your group. Most of the time, strangers couldn't care less about what you and your friends post. But if there's a local scandal or tragedy, your posting is just another news source.
