PM I got from a member of a conservative forum I post on
I have taken up the rather pointless hobby of correcting some of the misinformation volleyed about on a small conservative forum that I stumbled on by chance. Naturally I'm the forum punching bag and naturally, I could care less! Was surprised to get this PM today from one of the conservative posters:

Thanks for being a different voice on this forum. I know you take alot of heat from the crazies here but its nice to see a different opinion instead of the same old bobblehead "yes conservative is the best" rhetoric. IMHO - Obama will win this election. The Republicans are running either Right wing lunatics or unknown crazies and they will lose again. But its their fault - they started the crazy tea party which gave the lunatics a voice and a place to spew their bile and now they are going to pay for it. I left the Republican party after McCain/Palin won the nomination and went back to being an Independent. The both of them made me sick to my stomach. I am going to stay that way (an Independent) from now on - I'm sick of the Tea Party, Conservatives and the wimpy Republican party and am now going to vote for who I think is going to be the best for this country - not by party faithful. Thanks for taking the heat.

3. Franksolich is gonna have a fit...
He'll be using his admin status to search through CC's PM's, trying to find out who would dare utter such heresy. I recognize the text, and I know who posted it. Pretty fucking funny. The whole GOP is imploding. Couldn't happen to a finer group of raging assholes.

4. K & R and thanks!
I know it's difficult but you are honestly doing a great service attempting to engage those on the right. They aren't all insane and sometimes you can get through to those that are still reasonable. I used to post on a libertarian site for the same reason but it can really wear one down after a while. You're doing a great job!

6. I've found that sports team's off-topic forums are a great way to reach out to conservatives.
They really will listen to someone who keeps their cool and makes a well stated argument. This is after a preliminary round of resistance and ganging up, but it really does work. I bet the powers that be really don't want us to think that's possible!

OK I will.
If you're not a democrat or republic, pick something else. There's other political ideologies even if there is no representation. Just saying you're none of the above annoys the hell out of me.

15. An agnostic would be analogous to someone who's apolitical.
Edited on Wed May-18-11 08:18 PM by Shagbark Hickory
Someone who's independent would be someone who says they're religous but won't pick a religion.
Don't forget we also have these annoying swing states down here. The annoying people can't make up their friggin minds.

25. Agree. They are no different than libertarians.
If you push them, you will find that they really do support one party or the other. I think they are worried about the confrontation, and think giving themselves a generic label will prevent it.

27. Hello. I'm registered "no party affiliation."
Just reregistered in another state, after a lifetime of registering "decline to state" in California. It's a privacy thing: cuts down on the junk mail, junk phone calls, and selective prosecution.

I'm too liberal for most Democrats, anyway. Bernie Sanders is my guy. He's an independent; does he piss you off, too?

Guess what - most people realize that neither party gives a shit about them. "Independent" gives them something to call themselves. I applaud folks who aren't taken in by false choices.

24. You are dead wrong.
About it being a rather pointless hobby--posting on a conservative forum. We should all take the time to do this. It is our obligation as good citizens. If we all posted on progressive forums and never on conservative forum, we would all be preaching to the choir and getting nowhere. It is up to us, each one of us, to put the lies to rest and speak the truth to those who would either perpetuate the lies, or believe them. I commend you for this, and thank you.

41. Like this! K8-EEE, you've got a stronger stomach than many of us have.
I salute you!

It reminds me of the email that found its way to me from some young woman farther up on one email chain. The email was one of those obnoxious Democrats-BAD/GOP-GOOD liberals-are-shit/dubya-is-the-best-president-ever astroturf pieces of crap. I'd had just about enough of them and instead of just hitting the delete button as I usually did, I responded to the email - to EVERYONE all the way down the email chain. I remember getting one fire-breather that demanded "WHERE were you 9/11?" (Not "where were you on 9/11". It was "where were you 9/11"). And I responded separately to that one and got more fire-breathing back. He probably didn't like everything I recounted having done on 9/11, from comforting the mom across the street who routinely took one of those coast-to-coast flights for her business to developing a Cub Scout campaign with the den mother that afternoon to raise money for the Red Cross. Probably wasn't sufficiently "American" for him. But the OTHER response I got was very different - from a young woman who thanked me for speaking out and knocking down all the lame-brain "points" made in the original email, and for making her feel as though she wasn't alone. She wrote that she never spoke up because she felt isolated and as though nobody else in the country shared her view so she better just keep quiet about it, and my email told her LOTS of other people shared her views.

Not trying to pat myself on the back here - ANYONE can do that if he or she wants to make sure assholes like the sender of the original email (or forwarded it along) do NOT get the last word! And sometimes you might reach through the crap and actually find a kindred spirit waiting for rescue, or at least a little solidarity to reinforce them in their own trampled-on or shouted-down opinions.

The bad guys can only prevail if us good guys sit back in silence or apathy and do nothing.
