So - Woodstock and Twiggy made those depraved fuckers molest children ?
Study Finds Homosexuality, Celibacy Did Not Cause Catholic Sex Abuse Crisis

A five-year study commissioned by Roman Catholic bishops in the United States concluded the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church was caused by poorly prepared priests in the midst of the social and sexual revolution of the Woodstock Era.

The 300-page report titled The Causes and Context of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests in the United States, 1950-2010 is set to be released later today, but the Religion News Service published an account of the report, yesterday.

The News Service reports that the huge spike in abuse cases in the '60s and '70s had to do with ill-equipped priests who "lost their way in the social cataclysm of the sexual revolution."

5. Yup, along with "Sgt. Pepper" and Martin Luther King...
And yet it fights the rightwing/institutional memory hole-style attack on the 60's, lest people get the idea in their heads that they might challenge the system once again...

maybe it was The Ed Sullivan show.

...aren't more likely to act out when normal relationship alternatives are denied to them?

Most pedophiles aren't exclusively into children -- many carry on normal/adult relationships for years before resorting to children as the opportunity/"necessity" arises.

8. Well, they are right that celibacy and homosexuality do not cause sexual abuse. What
Edited on Wed May-18-11 05:41 PM by LiberalLoner
causes sexual abuse is a person who so lacks empathy for others that he or she feels entitled to harm them to their core just to meet their own selfish needs.

There will never be any convenient hook on which to lay the blame for this. The blame lies solely with each person who has ever harmed a child. And there will be no excuses when child molesters face God. God gives forgiveness, but he doesn't accept excuses. Or Mastercard. (That's what I've heard anyway.)

I've met plenty of gay people who never molested a child. I've met plenty of celibate people who never molested a child. I've met plenty of people who lived through the 1960's and never molested a child (like me.)

14. What greatly exacerbated the abuse problem in the Church
Is the fact that they covered up and protected abusive pedophile priests.

And now they want to blame the hippies for their coverup.

20. exactly
I heard about this story on my drive home. They also interviewed a priest who was abused, and will soon be leaving the church.

He said the exact same thing you just did. Sans hippies :)

Everyone protects the alpha male, whether its inside the church or anywhere else. Anyone who grew up in a family with any kind of abuse can tell you that. My recent personal experience in other matters is that the tribe will close ranks and protect its alpha male, as long as he's bringing the good times. The tribe needs its alpha way more than it needs the victim.

What exacerbates the problem of abuse in the church is that:

for girl children, you are given a list of women to pattern yourself after, including the glorious virgin, and you are given a list of women who you don't want to be like - better known as whores. When a girl who's been going to catechism class 5 days a week suddenly realizes that she's been doing all those naughty things with a priest - a frigging HOLY man - on comes a mind fuck of colossal proportions. After all, priests are good, priests are holy, priests don't do the things your parents do - therefor it must be YOU who are evil.

Likewise, for boy children - who are usually a little bit older when it happens and until the 1980s/1990s, were only just starting to hear about homosexuality, being led into that brings on a guilt trip and metaphysical crisis of equally unimaginable proportions.

Sorry, I don't believe that.

And yes, the Church is now trying to blame the dirty fucking hippies.

31. To Try to Be More Clear
My point was that the church's cover-up doesn't exacerbate the church's problem any more than anyone else's cover-up has exacerbated *their* own perpetrated abuse.

It makes a better case for a lawsuit, that's for certain.

17. This "study" stinks to high heavens....
"One of the biggest, the News service reports, is that "of nearly 6,000 priests accused of abuse over the past half century (about 5 percent of the total number of priests serving during that period), less than 4 percent could be considered pedophiles, the report notes — that is, men who prey on children."

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/05/18/136429556/study-finds-homosexuality-celibacy-did-not-cause-catholic-sex-abuse-crisis

"That finding is likely to prove controversial, in part because the report employs a definition of “prepubescent” children as those age 10 and under. Using this cutoff, the report found that only 22 percent of the priests’ victims were prepubescent.

The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders classifies a prepubescent child as generally age 13 or younger. If the John Jay researchers had used that cutoff, a vast majority of the abusers’ victims would have been considered prepubescent."

18. Strange that I have never wanted to molest a child.
I was young when Woodstock happened, but the music was great even way back then.

I did attend the Champagne Jam one year, the year the Cars released their first album, and even though I had partaken in some substances, I was shocked to walk up on two couples in the grass having sex. Even that didn't make me want to molest children. I just snickered and wondered what the hell they had partaken in that they were so oblivious to the people around them.

I must be a weirdo or something.
