"DSK" . . . . I think reducing a newsworthy person to initials trivializes the entire story.
JFK

MLK

RFK

JBJ

OBL

KSM

WJC

the EverMoron single initial that is Dubya

HRC

. . . and the latest . . . .

DSK for the head of the IMF, now in the clink on sexual assault and rape charges.

What does it save to reduce these people to initials? It isn't as if we're getting our news on the old Arpanet, or even texting on a 9 button keypad.

I think it is laziness and, worse. It is a part - albeit minor - of the morphing of news and entertainment. Back in the 60s, JFK was such an unusual way to refer to a president, it wasn't nearly so trivial. Over the years it has gotten, in my view, completely out of hand.

1. No, the American media did not come up with that.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/16/dominique-strauss-khan-tristane-banon?CMP=twt_gu

Per the article above that is how he is known in France.

DSK, as he is known in France, will now stay in prison until his next court hearing on May 20. He faces charges of attempted rape, sex abuse, a criminal sex act, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching and could face up to 25 years in prison.

Sorry SC, but the laziness might be from you. No offense.

19. It means something to me.
Obviously you see it differently.

But rolling on the floor laughing? Did you actually do that when you read this post? Roll on the floor? Laugh out loud?

Or was it more along the lines "Oh, here's my chance to take a shot at a poster I despise?"

Go 'head. You can admit it. There was no floor rolls cum guffaws, were there?

4. I don't see much difference between that and referring to "Rachel"
or Keith" or "Russ" or...

Referring to famous people, ESPECIALLY those we like, by their first name makes me uncomfortable, but I don't think it's worthy of commenting when I see it, either. YMMV.

18. The OP was referring to the media.
There's a certain gravitas in using a person's name.

What we call the same person is inconsequential as we don't have the power to shape opinins in any meaningul sort of way.

16. I disagree. OBL is infinitely preferable to Osama, which the Rethugs
love to use because it sounds like Obama.

And DSK has a long and -- for Americans -- hard to spell name. Writing DSK is just a convenience.

30. Actually, what bothers me
is when "newscasters" trivialize a story by emoting their ways through it.

I have a list of newscasters I love to hate. They report the news like they're telling a story to a bunch of 5 year olds.

It's insulting.

As for reducing a person's name to initials and how it trivializes a story, I don't see it that way. In fact, I sort of like it. Especially with regards to people whose names I've seen shortened like that for decades. JFK...RFK...FDR...LBJ... I get mental images of the faces I've always associated with those initials.

But really, what bugs me is the almost party-like atmosphere at the news stations when they're reporting the news.

I miss Walter Cronkite and his mostly deadpan delivery.
