Anti-obesity drugs given to babies in the womb
Hundreds of pregnant mothers will take anti-obesity pills in a new study aimed at creating smaller babies and lowering the risk for Caesarean sections.

Although it is aimed at helping obese woman have easier births, the study has a weight loss group riled up, calling it ‘disturbing.’

The three-year study will be completed at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital in the U.K., along with others in Coventry and Edinburgh.

The more than 400 pregnant moms involved, who are all obese, will not lose any weight in the process. The babies are the ones expected to get smaller from the pills.

1. I was an obese mom, but my babies were normal weight. Unless I had gestational diabetes, I wouldn't
have wanted anything to do with fetal weight loss pills. And maybe not even then.

2. Can the drug be given retroactively... by 52 years?

3. And fast forward 20 years in to the future . . .

Whoops, that was a mistake. At least we weren't as stupid as those doctors that gave thalidomide to pregnant women. Our kids only developed horns and speak in an unnerving form of latin.

4. And how many more low-birthweight infants will be the result?

5. Back in the 50s
this result was achieved by smoking cigarettes. No joke.

6. These days too. A friend of mine worked as a nurse in a prenatal health program at a high school
about 10 years ago and said the pregnant girls would start smoking so labor would "be easier" and they would have "cute little babies."

7. Since when do obese women
necessarily have big babies?

Not to mention, the ultimate long-term effects of these drugs are totally unknown at this point.

What was that drug -- DES? -- that was given to women during the 50's to prevent miscarriage? It didn't prevent miscarriages, but many daughters born to women who were given the drug had subsequent reproductive organ issues.

While I am certainly one of those who thinks there are many, many unnecessary C-sections in this country, I think a C-section is a lot better than some serious health issues down the road for the baby.
