Anti-poverty group defies ban on feeding homeless in Orlando's parks
Members of Orlando Food Not Bombs gathered at Lake Eola Park on Wednesday evening to serve dinner to the poor and homeless — an act they expected would get them arrested.
But Orlando officials weren't biting.
The group said it was defying the city's ban on large-group feedings in downtown parks, a law that was unanimously backed by a federal appeals court last month. Instead of an arrest, a woman from the city's parks department arrived to give members a permit, though the group never applied for one.
"We crumpled it up and tried to give it back to her," said Mark Stephen, a longtime member of the group. "But she just let it fall to the ground."
