CNN: Why you should eat squirrel
I have a squirrel guy. His name is Buddy and by trade he's a sound engineer, but in his heart of hearts, he's a hunter. Buddy doesn't hunt simply for sport; he, his girlfriend and his son cook only meat and fish that they have personally dispatched.

If Buddy's willing to share meat with me, I say, 'thank you' and take what he's offering. I know his kill was clean, quick and respectful, it'll be expertly cleaned and dressed, and no way am I going to find anything of its variety or caliber in my local butcher shop or supermarket.

That doesn't mean that when he offered me a brace of squirrels, I didn't initially have pause. I got over that pretty pretty quickly - and deliciously - and you should, too. Here's why.

1. Squirrel is the chicken of the trees
2. Squirrel is a locavore's delight
3. Squirrel is a classic
4. Squirrel is easy to cook
5. Squirrel just tastes great

<snip>

http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2011/05/20/give-squirrel-a-whirl/

I don't know what's up with CNN and unusual meat this week. They had a story about eating horse a few days ago.

4. Um, no. I've eaten squirrel and no, it does not taste like "chicken of the trees"
My cousin used to hunt squirrels when we were kids and my grandmother, bless her, would cook whatever he got. Consequently I've eaten squirrels, birds, groundhogs, deer, and snakes.

Squirrel is stringy, not very flavorful and not much meat for the effort.

I say used to, mainly because I have not had a pork chop in probably 30 years.

Opinions differ though, see below.

BTW - I do love your signature line.

37. If the squirrel was stringy then someone didn't know the fine art of cooking them
And if they're not flavorful to you then you must be a city kid :-)

5. Squirrel is, indeed, good eats.
It's been a while since I ate squirrel, but I've enjoyed it each time. Easy to skin, easy to cook, and delicious, no matter how you prepare it.

These days, I'm feeding the squirrels in my yard, but I'm not hungry enough or poor enough. In other times, I was.

6. A student I knew from Italy marveled at all of the squirrels on campus.
Hanging out on the mall, shorting out electrical transformers, raiding garbage cans, and generally making a nuisance of themselves.

He said in his country they would have all been caught and eaten a long time ago.

7. Maybe that's because in the near future, most people will only be able to eat by growing gardens or
eating squirrels and horses. The more the Republicans continue their draconian rule, the better chance for all things good for the masses to fail or go away, leaving people starving for everything from health care to regular food. CNN is trying to get us used to the idea that "Squirrel and Horses" are good food, after all, even Mike Huckabee eats squirrels (popped in a popcorn maker) and he can afford to eat any meat he chooses.

16. I think they are cute! The ones in NYC parks are very bold though
I would always carry nuts with me or nut bars (which are kind of sticky). One day, I had a hard time getting the nut bar off my fingers and the squirrel just leapt up from the ground, grabbed my hand and grabbed the nugget out from between my fingers nipping me in the process. I still think they are cute, though.

28. and avocados, and potted plants outdoors
At least the little rodents eat the avocados: they dig up the plants just so they have a place to hide nuts.

If they didn't have those fluffy tails people would treat them like the rat kin they are.

And Mr. Squirrel has brothers, Mrs. Squirrel has sisters. The kid and I watch them every morning, talking to them.

I know plenty who can eat them but I can't, not after they started making noises back at me.

is a dead squirrel.

Little rat bastards have been invading my bird feeders again.

So far... I've managed to terminate 6 of them with a pellet rifle since late March (1,000 years from now when archeologists excavate my backyard, they'll be speculating about the significance of the dozens of squirrel skeletons scattered about).

My Dad and I would shoot them w/ the bb gun- and the lesson was to never kill anything you would not eat.

It's a little greasy, but not bad fried up with a good, spicey batter.

Kinda like eating chicken wings if I remember corretly.

became a vegetarian.

I've eaten bear, moose, elk, deer, pronghorn antelope, squirrel, rabbit, groundhog, rockchuck, porcupine, raccoon, pheasant, various types of grouse, ducks, partridge and quail, Canada goose, rattlesnake, crawdad, and bullfrog legs.

The ones that were completely awful were raccoon (fatty and greasy, yuk), porcupine, groundhog, rockchuck and rattlesnake. Horrible.

Here's granma's recipe for rockchuck:

Planked Rockchuck

Shoot a rockchuck that is raiding your garden. Skin and clean it. Boil well. With a sharp knife, split rockchuck down the belly. Splay it on a well soaked hardwood plank (do not use conifer planks). Nail it good and wire it securely. Marinate the rockchuck, plank and all, in a strong vegetable broth for 2 hrs. Place rockchuck upright on plank in front of hot coals on outdoor fireplace. Cook well for about two hours. When done, give the rockchuck to the dogs, and eat the plank.

36. Raised on 'm
Was squirrel hunting before I was in school. Fried or squirrel and dumplin's. Some mighty fine eating. As a kid growing up in northeast Oklahoma back in the early to mid 50's there were no other game except for rabbit and I've eaten many a cotton tail too. During the winter months my brother and I would be rolled out of bed (4:00 am) when mom got up to build a fire in the wood cook stove and go run our traps and if we caught any rabbits we'd have fried rabbits with our eggs and oatmeal. Rabbit or squirrel gravy is to kill for Hmmm hmmm good. Homemade biscuits as only mom could make them. damn I'm hungry now.
I can clean a squirrel or rabbit before city folk could figure out what they were going to eat too.

One of the bosses is bringing in a wild turkey that he shot and he has asked me to turn it into wild turkey chowder. We have a full kitchen at work, so we'll be having it for lunch one day next week. We have used venison and wild hog in many recipes including Shepherd's Pie, chili and lasagna, to name a few.
