(Reuters) - An explosion shook parts of the city of Londonderry in Northern Ireland on Saturday, but there were no reports of injuries, a police spokesman said.

Police said a warning was given and shoppers and staff evacuated from stores and businesses over a large area of the city centre.

"There has been an explosion in the Shipquay Street area of Derry. The area was evacuated at the time and there are no reports of any injuries," the police spokesman said.

A bomb has exploded on a shopping street in the centre of Derry city this afternoon.

There were no reports of any injuries or damage. It is understood the device detonated outside a building society. The area had been evacuated after an alert began in the Diamond area of the city following a phonecall.

Sinn F�in Councillor Gerry MacLochlainn said the attack appeared to have targeted a building society.

�The attack on a building society will not affect the global financial institutions nor the constitutional position of the North of Ireland but will seriously jeopardise jobs in the local economy,� he added.
