Barney Fife must be rolling in his grave
Barrow County deputy resigns after questions raised about Facebook postings

A captain with the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office saw his career begin to unravel a few weeks ago after he posted on his personal page on Facebook.com comments about President Obama, using terms like “towel headed” and “camel jockey.”

The comment thread on Facebook.com began as a discussion about “gas being $6 a gallon this summer and he called the Democratic Party ‘damocrats,' " Smith said. "He referenced our president as a camel jockey and made reference to African Americans backing their president. He referred to gays, baby killers and pot heads not blaming President Obama for the gas prices."

Smith said he learned of Rusgrove’s comments when someone anonymously slid an envelope under his office door containing a printout of the page.

“Law enforcement officers are held to a higher standard,” Smith said. “We don’t want them to wonder if we’re biased… Nothing you do on the Internet is private.”

6. In other news, Otis, the town drunk, gets arrested - again

'Otis' Arrested for Obstructing Sidewalk Outside Son's Store

MOUNT AIRY, N.C.
20 May 2011

A man's strife has been causing a stir in Mount Airy after he was arrested while sitting outside his son's business, where he often plays checkers.

According to the Mount Airy News, 63-year-old James Slate was handcuffed outside the Mayberry Country Store, located on North Main Street, for obstructing a city sidewalk on April 21.

Slate, who is known locally for impersonating Otis, the town drunk from "The Andy Griffith Show," was placed in a holding cell until his wife paid a $500 bail, the paper reports.

Slate is scheduled to appear in court on May 31 . However, the former 10-year veteran of the Mount Airy Police Department told the paper that the charges brought against him are unconstitutional.

The paper reports that the officer who made the arrest said Slate had been warned multiple times before to comply with the city's sidewalk ordinance.

The officer said Slate was arrested rather than cited because his son's business had previously been given the same citation for having items on the sidewalk. The officer said Slate should have taken his son's citation as a "warning," according to the paper.

The officer said the city has been enforcing the ordinance more strictly after requests from downtown vendors dating back to last fall.

12. The subject of one of the episodes....
A kid rides his bike on the sidewalk and refuses to stop creating a conflict between the sheriff and the kid's permissive father.

14. The conflict was only in the punk kid's mind
Andy, the master of non-confrontation, let it play out; the father caught on real quick and played along by asking for the bicycle a second time, saying he was going to sell it. Always a lesson to be learned in Mayberry, no matter how trivial. Otis may be the exception.

Don't worry, Mr. Smith. I don't think anyone is wondering.

18. How did an uneducated lout become sheriff?
It appears he knows little about commodity prices, and uses racism as a coverall to explain what he doesn't understand. That's the hallmark of the ignorant and stupid, yet he holds a high paying administrative position in city government. Something is very wrong in Barrow county.
