Baby Thrown Down Trash Compactor in Fort Greene NY
Police have arrested the mother of a newborn baby thrown down a trash compactor Sunday morning.

Police said they received a call at about 9:20 a.m. for a baby found in a plastic trash bag inside the Walt Whitman Houses, a housing project in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

The building's superintendent had heard the baby's cries coming from inside a garbage compactor in the basement of 102 Cumberland Walk, according to police. The Daily News reported the baby appeared to be about 12 hours old and still had its umbilical cord attached.

It wasn't clear how many floors the baby fell. The newborn was taken to Brooklyn Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

3. Easy, you're a kid who tried to deny the whole pregnancy
on the theory that if you just didn't think about it, it would go away. Then you had the worst bellyache of your life and a baby came sliding out. Since you hadn't told anybody (even yourself) that you were pregnant, you panicked and all you could think of was to get rid of it. It doesn't take much to realize what the likely scenario was.

This is what burdening young women with shame does.

13. I'm sure psychology had nothing to do with it.
Clearly a case of the criminal mind at work.

17. Pretty much.
Depraved indifference to human life.

Yep, it's a crime to throw a baby down a trash chute.

8. I read another absolutely horrific story about what a mother did to her child. I don't want to
give details because I want to spare people. I don't know how police cope with these sort of crimes. I actually feel tramatized having just skimmed the story I was referring to. :(

Aren't there any centers where women can drop off babies that they don't want, no questions asked?

12. There probably are but if it was a teenage pregnancy, she may not know
About them. A lot of girls are just not aware of their options, some because they have been sheltered, some because the information has been kept from them, some because they just don't have the exposure to information.

I can see how a woman who does not have the access or option of birth control would also not know of options to place an unwanted child in a safe haven.

19. Safe Haven laws
I know NY has them. Hosptials, fire stations, police stations. No questions asked. I wonder how close any one of those things were to this apartment building.

14. Part of the entire anti-abortion mindset
is that every fetus, accidental or otherwise, must be born. But none of these rabid "pro-lifers" are willing to provide pre-natal care for the mother and baby.

And, as has already been pointed out, it's easy to be in complete denial that you're pregnant. Even women who have already had babies report being unaware they were pregnant until shortly before giving birth. Personally, having been pregnant twice myself, I find those stories a little hard to believe, but nonetheless, if someone who's already had a kid or two and has no reason to be in denial can be unaware she's pregnant, than some younger woman who hasn't been pregnant before and who does not want to be pregnant now, could pretty easily ignore what might otherwise be very obvious signs.

18. Compassion before judgment
We simply have no idea what this woman went through before committing this act. She may have been a rape victim, a victim of incest or other abuse, or simply scared and ignorant. None of that justifies attempting to murder a baby, but compassion is still called for. This is a tragedy, pure and simple.

21. Did you even read my post?
What a nasty, sarcastic response. Where did I say this was OK to do? Nowhere, that's where. But, hey, let's all rush to judgment. I think I see a beam in your eye, there partner.
