1. Where are you at The Straight Story?
Are you nearby these tornadoes? Stay safe.

3. No, I am on Ohio - saw it on Breaking news. One tornado I remember though was there when I was
driving across country the first time. My X girlfriend's dad was from there, and on my trip out to meet her (we met on the net) I hit three tornadoes - one in Terre Haute, One near Joplin, and then one not far after crossing the MO/OK border.

The one near Joplin is the only one I actually saw - dark roads, rain swirling around my car, and off to the left (east) I saw lighting and the tornado.

Of all my trips that is the one I remember the most, and that night near Joplin was both scary and awesome.

6. I used to live in Illinois and I encountered a tornado while traveling
down I70, going home to Springfield from Champaign/Urbana. I parked the old '77 van under a highway overpass. Man, that thing just shook and vibrated, scaring the hell out of me. I have learned since then not to park under an overpass and how lucky I was that day.

32. They don't call it 'Tornado Alley' for nothing. Joplin actually sits
Edited on Sun May-22-11 09:14 PM by coalition_unwilling
at the northeastern edge of the alley which traverses the northeast corner of OK, northwest corner of Arkansas, southeast corner of KS and sw corner of Missouri. I grew up about 60 miles north northwest of Joplin. Never saw an actual tornado in the flesh -- our farm had a good root cellar\tornado shelter -- but saw the aftermaths of a couple. Pretty scary and awe-inspiring.

2. Here in Mid Missouri, we have one dancing around the Callaway Nuclear Reactor,
Don't know whether it's touched down, won't know until it is too late anyway:yoiks:

Missouri's turned to get hammered by tornadoes.

21. I hadn't heard Higginsville.
I'm sending off a text to a friend up there now.

I heard Waverly had a touchdown earlier and Clinton had rotation. Glasgow seemed imminent earlier and like Waverly it's a river town.

I wouldn't be surprised about Higginsville. I was in one at the hab center there while seven months pregnant. I wouldn't recommend it.

26. I found it on channel five.
Sounds like it was spotted in Higginsville and traveled to Waverly for the touchdown. Gotta love when the main source of info in Waverly is from the local Casey's.

Chances are good that more then a few of my relatives were affected by this.

25. Still haven't heard from my friend.
I know that Sonic! It's been there for a long time.

I worked at the Hab Center on the outskirts of town for a bit and I used to live right off the downtown.

13. It looks bad. Real bad.
Saw a picture of the hospital, significant damage, all the windows blown out, all the cars blown about. All around there is noting but destruction as far as the camera spans. I could see the huge O2 tanks are smoking. My room mate is concerned about a major trucking stop in the area.

19. The truck stops are six miles west on 44, and ten miles east
of approximately where the hospital is located.

I-44 is closed, I assume that the tornado crossed 44 somewhere around the five or six mile marker if it was moving NE or ENE.

20. Here's KC TV coverage:
JOPLIN, Mo. -- A large multi-vortex tornado hit Joplin Sunday evening and caused heavy damage as the city took a direct hit.

Several media reports said that numerous buildings along Rangeline Road, Highways 37 and 96 were demolished.

Another media report stated that St. John's Hospital was hit directly, along with a Walgreens, Home Depot and several other locations.

There was no initial reports of if anyone was injured in the tornado.

KCTV5 will update the story as it progresses.

14. Its horrific-roof blew off hospital--zero power, gas leak, they are afraid its going to explode
the roofs of two fire stations collapsed, and the surrounding neighborhood is decimated. Cars are stacked up on top of each other.

Its awful down here.

16. Also want to say that debris is coming down here, 1 hr away, and where the tornado hit
is one of the main roads through town. This was no little hit with scattered damage.

The reporter is outside of the hospital.

I wonder how Fred and Red came out of it? I ate there once and I really liked it.

29. The hospital is not on fire, and I don't think there
have been any explosions inside. Almost all the windows were blown out, and the neighborhood around it is completely levelled. I've been watching the weather channel live feed, and listening to the Joplin County law enforcement radio for a couple of hours now.
