5. Week ago Friday I was southbound on US 71, just north of Carthage, MO.
Which is just north and east of Joplin in Jasper county; drove under a funnel cloud moving NE at 40 mph.

Sounds like I-44 is closed, the hospital got hit, businesses around 25th St. got hit...what a mess.

6. Here's the KC Star coverage:
JOPLIN, Mo. | Authorities say a tornado has hit a Joplin hospital and caused the roofs of two city fire stations to collapse.

Jasper County Emergency Management Director Keith Stammer says a tornado hit the St. John’s Regional Medical Center on the city’s south side. He said there are multiple reports of injuries from the twister that struck around 6 p.m. Sunday.

There also were broadcast reports of damaged businesses and vehicles overturned on highway entrances elsewhere around or near the city.

KansasCity.com will have updates when they become available.

12. I live about an hour east of Joplin. Debris from the hospital is starting to come down here
x-rays, medical items, etc.

The weather and news people are very grim. Not only was the hospital hit, two fire stations had their roofs collapse. Huge amount of devastation.

14. There was an article on The Weather Channel after Tuscaloosa
and it had directions about what to do with the items that were scattered.

I can imagine with Medical Records it is going to be dicey...but I'm sure they would appreciate the stuff being gathered up and returned if possible.

Stay safe.

32. Medical records departments tend
to be in basements so it's unlikely that actual medical records are flying through the air, although there's always a lot of medical record type paperwork all over any hospital at any given time.

23. I work as a NAC, been doing so for twenty years.
I can't imagine this nightmare scenario. When I worked in Illinois we all had tornado drills... evacuate everyone into the hallways and close all the doors to the rooms. I always prayed this would never happen. I really feel for the staff at that hospital.

Off of Range Line Rd., exactly due east from where the hospital stands.

That production facility operates 24/7.

I wonder if they got hit.

Some good people that work there.

33. --> List of codes you'll hear emergency services use, and what they mean:
HERE

I was hearing lots of references to having "J4"'s at certain locations and I wanted to find out what that meant. I believe J4 means fatality based on that web page I link to, which covers the area.

:(

45. As in 10-97-J4?
I used to dispatch and a 10-97-J4 means fatality. I know whenever we heard J4 that meant to roll the coroner en route to location. In this case it could be tough.

38. I've been watching the live weather channel
feed for an hour or so now, and what's really amazing to me is how in the last fifteen minutes or so all of a sudden there are a lot of people wandering around, and the guy doing the live feed has not moved his location at all. At first it was just shots of empty devastation, and now people are out and about.

Those of you who recall the Greensburg, KS, tornado of May 4 2007, probably recall seeing footage of a town that was totally destroyed by a tornado that was nearly two miles wide. They're saying that this Joplin tornado was probably a mile wide. I had occasion to drive through Greensburg about once a year, sometimes more, for about five years, and I'd never paid much attention to it, until the tornado occurred. I next drove through in July just about two months after the tornado, and it looked as if it had happened two days before. The destruction that tornadoes can do is almost unbelievable, and I know from driving through Greensburg that seeing it on a TV or computer screen is nothing like actually being there.

My heart goes out to those in Joplin.

39. OMG this is so tragic
My thoughts and prayers go to those who have suffered loss through this tragedy.

I hope this thing weakens - it is headed our way (Memphis) too. I was looking at TWC and on the radar map it almost looks like a hurricane of clouds over the middle US - not good.

This is reminding me of the storms about a month ago.

God Bless Joplin,
Annette
