Joplin tornado death toll soars to 89
<snip>
UPDATES 5:40 a.m. wtih death toll at 89

JOPLIN, Mo. • A massive tornado that ripped through the heart of Joplin Sunday evening killed at least 89 people, emergency officials said at a predawn news conference.

City manager Mark Rohr announced the number at a pre-dawn news conference outside the wreckage of a hospital that took a direct hit from Sunday's storm.

Rohr said the twister cut a path nearly six miles long and more than a half-mile wide through the center of town.

Much of the city's south side was leveled, with businesses, homes and restaurants reduced to ruins.

1. Sadly, this is probably only the tip of the iceberg.
Al Roker is on the ground there, showing the damage (Today Show, NBC and the Weather Channel). Unbelievable devastation, and more bad weather forecast for today.

8. 30% is closer to reality, but that 'smaller' number is misleading. Horrible, horrible
damage. Path of damage at least 6 miles long. Check out my link below.

14. It's about a third
but that third of the town contains many businesses, a high school, and a hospital, along with nursing homes and such.

So it's smaller but it's worse then it sounds.

2. I imagine that way more than 89 people were in that twisted mass of
metal that was once Walmart.

15. People in trailer courts will sometimes drive to
places like Walmart to take cover. I'd hate to think about what they'll find when they get some of the clean up done.

13. GMA reporter just interviewed a survivor from the hospital.
He told a story of his son seeing a man impaled by a 2x4 into a wall as he was trying to get to safety.
