'Cut the city in half': Deadliest tornado in Missouri's history kills at least 89 people in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — A massive tornado — the deadliest in Missouri's history — tore through the city of Joplin on Sunday, killing at least 89 people. Authorities fear the death toll could climb Monday as search and rescue teams continue their work.

Much of the city's south side was leveled, with churches, schools, businesses and homes reduced to ruins.

Fire chief Mitch Randles estimated that 25 to 30 percent of the city was damaged, and said his own home was among the buildings destroyed as the twister swept through this city of about 50,000 people some 160 miles south of Kansas City.

"It cut the city in half," Randles said.

3. This is unutterably sad.
How do people even begin to cope with such awful devastation? All good wishes, thoughts and blessings to those whose lives are forever changed.

these tornado's are reeking havoc in so many states, and the loss of life in devastating.

I think the weather channel has reported that there is more moisture in the air thus giving horrific tornados.

5. Yep. Warmer climate means more water evaporates.
More water in the air means more energy for storms. This is just the beginning.

8. CNN just showed cell-phone video...

...from a man who was in a convenience store when the tornado hit. As glass blew the windows
out, customers decided to huddle inside a walk-in freezer. Good thing they did. After the
tornado moved on, they came out of the freezer to find that the entire convenience store had
been leveled. Everything was destroyed and most of the building was gone. The only thing in
the store that remained intact was that freezer.

Absolutely unbelievable!

12. Now what?
Edited on Tue May-24-11 04:29 AM by onethatcares
how do these people get back on their feet, back to homes, business, and churches?

This type of disaster is happening throughout the U.S. of A. and aside from some pics on MSM, very little is said.

The tornados, the floods, they've displaced millions of people, where are they going to live for the next 6 months?

How are they going to eat and what are they going to do?

I'm waiting for more than platitudes from our government.

I'm also waiting to hear where the National Guard is during all of this.

13. We can expect to see millions more climate refugees throughout the world. Sadly, weather incidents
like this may indicate that the world has reached the tipping point where little can be done to reverse the change in climate. I hope not but...
