Why would someone come to Florida to have sex with a kid?
Just about the only thing that Florida does right is being pro-active with these kind of cases. Maybe to the point of going overboard sometimes. Hasn't the word gone out to other states? This is just about the only thing our criminal justice system excels at, or am I missing something?

Police: Magician-lawyer traveled to Florida for sex with boy

TAVARES – A Baltimore lawyer and magician who owns a children's entertainment company in Maryland was arrested today on felony charges accusing him of traveling to Florida to have sex with a boy.

Howard Scott Kalin, 47, identified as the owner of "Funhouse Entertainment" in Baltimore, chatted online over a period of several months with Lake County sheriff's detectives posing as a 14-year-old boy and the boy's caregiver.

He promised to bring a basketball to the boy and planned on having sex with him, deputies said.

Kalin, who used an alias in his chats with the detectives, arrived today in Florida and traveled to an undisclosed, pre-arranged location where he expected to meet with the child and the caregiver, according to sheriff's deputies.

1. Why?
Cuz he can, this is America.

The real question is, has the number of pedophiles increased over the last 50 years, decreased, unchanged, or has law enforcement gotten better at catching them.

Think of the many parks and the number of families with little ones it attracts. Great place for a pedophile to find victims unfortunately. It would be interesting to see how Florida places when it comes to sex crimes.

3. Raping a local kid would be much more risky, I would think.
Unless, as in this case, his intended victim turns out to be a cop.

Undercover sex 'sting' nets 17

More than a dozen people have been arrested in an undercover sting in connection with soliciting ("luring and enticing") minors on the Internet, according to St. Johns County Sheriff’s detectives.

Deputies arrested 17 people who were allegedly targeting children on the Internet through various E-commerce sites, detectives said. These individuals, all of whom were men, agreed to meet who they thought were minors at a home in Northwest St. Johns County. That’s when detectives were able to make arrests. snip

The sting, called “Operation Sheepdog,” brought individuals in from Duval, Clay, Nassau, Volusia, Alachua and Osceola counties, and Georgia, according to a St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office report. None of the arrests were of residents living in St. Johns County. The 17 suspects range in age from 20-55 years old and are facing 60 third and second degree felony charges among them, the report said. snip

Two suspects are active military personnel and one is a middle school teacher, detectives said.

6. That's what I'm saying.
Even our local police department decided to get in the act, which worried me for a while because I figured it was just an excuse to snoop into everyone's computer. I don't have a problem with them going out and fishing for these guys on chatlines, or even tracking purchases from known sites, but beyond that I think we're into Murdoch territory.

5. Because we troll for it here
several local law enforcement outfits make a regular business of trolling for these guys on-line. They have apparently become quite adept at impersonating teenage kids on-line. They come here because we put the bait in the water.

7. That's what I'm trying to point out.
At some point the peddies need to get the message that Florida is too big a risk to come fishing for kids on the internet.

8. Or alternately, they can just keep coming
we will surely be making room for them in Gov. Scott's privatized "prison for profit" system.
