2 officers struck by lightening during search & rescue(Joplin)
Only source at this time is KMBC during live broadcast within past five minutes. No further details but sounded like they were pulling searchers back during the storm.

3. No further reports.
KMBC said that they won't be reporting from the ground during this storm. They said they'll update on site and at 9pm.

5. I am so sorry
I wish there was some way to keep everyone safe.

Do you have a safe (or as safe as is possible) place to be?

9. I'm not so bad.
We haven't been hit-yet. My town is sadly overdue.

It's time to worry more about Joplin. They still have a few days of storms ahead of them.

10. I've heard that it was 120+
but that hadn't been officially confirmed. It was just eyes on the ground.

11. I'm more towards KC
a bit south of there-Warrensburg. We tend to get a combo of the KC and the lake weather, which can be very nasty.

Tomorrow's worst times are supposed to be between 4pm and midnight. Today we had a storm "event" from 11 to noon and it was pretty nasty. Dummy that I was felt the need to go to Walmart at 10:30 and was stuck d/t high winds and what sounded like hail.

My backyard is flooded.

13. Is this the same person? Riverside police officer hit by lightning in Joplin
A Riverside police officer was injured by lightning Monday while helping with rescue-and-recovery efforts in Joplin, Riverside Public Safety said.

The officer, 31, is being treated at a hospital there with “significant” injuries. He was standing next to an all-terrain vehicle when lightning struck the ground next to him late Monday.

14. Riverside would be it.
The initial report was two officers. Riverside is in the KC area and it was a KC station reporting it.

17. Considering the weather there I'm not about to argue it isn't more than one
When I read that I admit my first thought was, it's not surprising considering what they're out there working in. All the people out braving that unpredictable and violent weather while trying to rescue people have my total respect.

18. No argument here.
You know how initial reports can be. Plus, there was no written source-just the television reporting it as "breaking news".

I believe it was ABC that spoke with a woman from Boone County. She and her K9 had been out searching for 20 hours when they spoke with her and she said she had no plans to stop.

16. My sister was struck by lightning about 14 years ago.
She suffered pretty bad nerve damage.

Lightning strikes result in weird injuries that are hard to deal with because not enough is known about the resultant damage.

It is very different than common electrical injuries and due to lightining strikes relative rarity, there is a lot of skeptic attitudes to overcome as well.

The injuries are on the inside, not the outside. And they are manifold, diverse and...weird.

21. One of the stranger 'injuries' is a personality change
I put that in single quotes, because sometimes it's not an injury as such, but more of a drastic change. In some cases, the affected person is, for all intents and purposes, a different person then they were before; a previously humorous person may completely lose their sense of humor, one might be left unable to speak properly, or suddenly develop an aptitude, be it for math or architecture or music.

Very, very weird effects are possible for lightning strike victims. I honestly thought that was a well-known fact.

22. Yes!
But I don't think it is a well-known fact.

Most people have a hard time believing that someone could be struck by lightning without visible scars like a blackened face and frizzled hair from out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon.
