Was reading a book about Gideon Welles (Lincoln's Sec. of Navy). Welles remarked that in the first days of 1860 everybody in D.C. thought that the talk of secession was just a "party" thing and that some adjustments would be made between the parties and life would go on. Also, when the first states seceded, Welles wanted to garrison the valuable Gosport (Newport)Naval Yard but Lincoln said "no"---he wanted to treat the Virginia politicians real nice, make no waves, and pray they stayed in the Union and that federal troops there would just piss them off. Well, VA kissed the Union goodbye, and Lincoln had to burn the goddamn thing down to keep it out of their hands.
Fast forward to today----I keep thinking about that "little party bickering" about the "debt ceiling" and how, of course, the parties will certainly make an "adjustment" and pull us back from the brink........(ohhh, ummm, will they?). And I keep thinking that if you keep trying to appease the lunatics, the prez might have to burn something down (like a full frontal attack on the Tea Party) to save the people of this country----(umm, or do you just let the lunatics destroy it.
