Are the cuts to NOAA and NWS budgets still in the GOP budget plan?
You know, those agencies that provide warning to people about those things like tornadoes and hurricanes?

If the GOP and Tea Party are still pushing cutting the budgets of the agencies which can provide warnings and save lives, we need to be pushing that news out there just as hard as the "push grandma off the cliff" ad pushes the cuts to Medicare!

3. I don't know if they were or if they are, but...
there are enough dopplers, super-dopplers, etc. that it probably will not make much difference either way.

4. Actually the satellites also feed the dopplers they work in conjunction
Edited on Tue May-24-11 08:02 PM by HillbillyBob
AND the current very expensive NOAA satellites are reaching the end of their life span and the dumbasses want to block that funding..but they keep trying to buy that godamn unneeded F35 jet motor that is actually a fucking spare that costs some billions (which would more than cover the replacement satellites).

Land based radar cannot reach all the way out there where the Hurricanes are born, the satellites are early warning and monitoring. They save lives but ya know its not fetus(i?) so they don't give a crap if we all die so long as they can steal what little we have left.

5. What good are dopplers if the local National Weather Service site
Can't stay online? Or if the radar is out of service two days every week? I swear, the Tallahassee NWS web site is down at least twice a week, especially when there is bad weather moving in. And their radar is not working at least twice a week, no matter what else might be going on.

And if the other replier is correct, that the satellites that provide the data need to be replaced, then we may be SOL for early warning systems.

One thing I read a while back was that the GOP wanted to defund the government programs so people had to turn to for profit weather forecasting services. I do go to some for profit weather sites - Intellicast, for one - but for reliable, no frills forecasting I prefer nws.noaa.gov over any alternative.

9. You don't need a government weatherman to tell you which way the wind is blowing.
There are many, many options that do not require prima donna fedgov "workers."

10. Yeah, like I can use that data to craft a forecast
I need to have someone with the education, training and experience to interpret that data for me, especially during hurricane season. I need to know the chances of a storm headed my way and how intense it could be so I can plan ahead.

I don't want a for-profit company to be the only place I can go to for that interpretation. If the Repugs have their way, eventually we would all have to pay to get that data. Or be able to subscribe to a news service or channel that pays for it.

6. Do they care about those who have been devastated by these storms?
A majority of those who were in the path of these storms are not large donors to the GOP.

Since the GOP is always trying to stop people from voting, loss of life does not hurt their chances in elections.

Rebuilding allows corporations to make more profit at the expense of the people.

Donors, voters and corporations - that covers the only concerns the GOP has.

7. No they don't, and that should be the Democratic Party's strength
We are supposed to care about people whether or not they are likely to vote for our candidates. So when the GOP is blatant about their disregard, we need to make it clear to the citizens of our country who is really on the side of people and who is only concerned with their own power and the money they can make.
