Now, how will this be spun?
"Oh, this isn't a referendum on Paul Ryan at all, it's a referendum on the Chris Lee scandal."

"Oh, there was a Tea Party candidate in the race."

"IT'S ONLY ONE SEAT!!!"

All of course, are bullshit. This is a big win, hopefully Paul Ryan fails to take note and continues the GOP self-destruction.

2. I guarantee you the serious Republican leadership will sit up and take notice of the
results of this race. With all the money they spent on this, this was not a win for them. They can say, hey, if you added the T candidate plus the R it adds up to a majority, and okay they have a point but - this race should not have been anywhere near close.

I think some of the really big names in the Republican pantheon are sitting out 2012 because they believe they will have a better chance in 2016.

4. I'm sure the Democrats will find a way to justify a further drift to the right...
"Why, if we'd been liberal, we would have lost that district to a Teabagger!"

6. This needs to be a wake up call to the cons in our own party
The people reject the policies the right is now supporting.

They can lose just as easily.

10. well, given that the true owners of each party would resist such a wake-up call...
...it will indeed be interesting to see how all this is spun, in as "non-threatening" a way as possible...

5. This is a huge win for us.
This district has never voted Democrat in modern times. They can spin all they want, but the fact is, they won this district with Lee by a 75/25 margin. They lost it 48/43 a year later. That's not a slight demographic shift...that's a message that the Republicans are in very, very deep shit.

9. They will probably say that they would have won with the Tea Party votes?
However, there was no guarantee that the Tea Partiers would have voted at all if they had not voted for Davis. After all, they could have voted for the Republican if they had wanted.

12. Publicly, they will blame the loss on Davis
Truth be told, Corwin ran a crappy campaign. Totally negative, had no real message and told outright lies about her Hochul. The lies were so outrageous they reeked of desperation. She refused to discuss the altercation between her chief of staff and Jack Davis. Most important, she was unable to sell her "Senior premium choice" plan to her voters.

Davis was definitely a factor, mostly because Corwin decided to focus on beating up on him, rather than taking on the real issues. I don't think she ever took Kathy's candidacy seriously.
