Sorry, but Pelosi's statement regarding Hochul wins the night.
Pelosi:

"Kathy Hochul's victory tonight is a tribute to Democrats' commitment to preserve and strengthen Medicare, create jobs, and grow our economy," Pelosi said. "And it sends a clear message that will echo nationwide: Republicans will be held accountable for their vote to end Medicare."

Obama:

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 24, 2011

Statement by the President on the Election of Kathy Hochul to Congress

I want to extend my congratulations to Congresswoman-elect Kathy Hochul for her victory in New York's 26th Congressional District. Kathy and I both believe that we need to create jobs, grow our economy, and reduce the deficit in order to outcompete other nations and win the future. Kathy has shown, through her victory and throughout her career, that she will fight for the families and businesses in western New York, and I look forward to working with her when she gets to Washington.

11. We do need to reduce the deficit, starting w/reversing Bush tax cuts
And making changes that ensure those who have profited most from trashing our economy are also PAYING the most.

I have nothing against deficit reduction so long as it focuses on putting taxes back where they were or cutting our military involvements.

6. "reduce the deficit" WTFF?
I could close my eyes and that would sound like a Republican President congratulating a Republican candidate.

And some people wonder why other people are upset with Obama.

16. "reduce the deficit" WTFF?
So.... you don't want to reduce the deficit?

We need to. But anyone not advocating ending tax cuts for the rich, making corporations pay a mandatory minimum tax, and cutting waste in the defense budget is simply not serious about it. Anyone, left or right.

He doesn't sound like a Repug... he sounds like a politician.

24. We need to spend our way out of this mess.
We can reduce the deficit by bringing three wars to an end and taxing the rich. We need not cut the deficit on the backs of the unemployed or anyone else underrepresented in the halls of power.

19. Here's the problem with the statement from the White House
By painting Hochul's surprise victory in a very Republican district as a vote in favor of deficit reduction, the White House fails to draw the clear distinction that carried the day for Hochul. All three candidates wanted to reduce the deficit, but only one of them wanted to preserve Medicare. If there was a difference maker in this special election - and there was - it wasn't deficit reduction. The difference between the parties couldn't be starker than in their approach to Medicare, and Hochul's victory validates the Democratic position; the White House's failure to emphasize this very pertinent point is very puzzling. But I have my suspicions for why that might be.

23. Prioritize,
Create living wage jobs, deficit reduction should not be bourne by the poor and working poor. Hell, the wealthy got a tax cut. Where is reality? IMO, deficit reduction, is not in the top five priorities.
:wtf:

Great election strategy? Just say THAT ONE LINE on a continuous loop from now until Nov. 2012.

20. I live in hope, but...
omitting any mention of Medicare in the White House statement about Hochul's victory is the kind of finesse that gives me the heeby-jeebies.
NO Democrat, including our President, should even hint at any weakness on this score.

Unless, of course, it's to rub it in the faces of douche bags who would rather see seniors die then to find better ways to improve the economy and lighten up the deficit.
