Well it didn’t take long, but it took longer than I thought. I wrote before the last election that the arriving Republicans would bring one of two policy positions. They would either have nothing substantive to contribute to the solution, or they would bring up massive cuts to Medicare and reap a huge backlash from their own voters. Well, it turned out to be the latter.
So now it will be back to the former, since they only have two plays in their playbook. They cannot bring themselves to discuss taxes, so they are back to the other of their two choices. We are back to door number one. Door number one is insisting on a lot of cuts to other things like, well like enforcing the laws about health, safety, financial regulation and the environment, that won’t solve the deficit, but MAY succeed in triggering a debt ceiling impasse, a default and another economic meltdown. Deregulation and economic meltdown is home sweet home turf for the GOP and the Bush presidency delivered same with a vengeance.
I guess the voters wanted another helping of that and they are due to get it.
