Family Says Boy, 9, Died After School Didn't Respond To Asthma Attack

MANSFIELD, Ohio — The Richland County coroner said a young boy died from an asthma attack that started while he was at school and on Tuesday the boy's family said the school did not do enough to get him the help he needed.

Keshan Brown enjoyed math and science and wanted to be a doctor, 10TV's Tanisha Mallett reported.

The 9-year-old's family is questioning the school's response, saying he was not taken to a doctor following an asthma attack.

The family's attorney said Brown had an attack during recess last week and had to be carried off the playground, but stayed in school and finished the day.

...

The attorney supplied a copy of what he said is Brown's medical authorization form, that was on file with the school. It states that in an emergency the school has his mother's consent to take him to the hospital.

1. The school had no school nurse? (Implied in the article)
I think the school district is going to lose this one. The mother gave permission to bring her child to the hospital if need be, but nobody there was qualified to know how very sick he was, it seems.

How sad.

3. A school nurse? Oh, what a quaint concept!
And here in Texas, we may soon be saying the same about school librarians, school aides, and ... school teachers.

4. I hope they win-to get the point across.
It's a tragedy & the poor family deserved better. All our children deserve better. Starve the beast is working fine for Grover Norquist. Not so much for us.

The best we get at our kids Elementary school is sympathetic teachers. My youngest daughter managed to break her leg-a spiral fracture no less. They called it a sprained ankle & at least they called home.Luckilly my wife was there & was able to take her to our Dr. where an X-ray revealed the fracture.

We never got help with the bills & spent over 3K w/ our insurance coverage. Also-get this-I got a little girl with a badly broken leg. They wanted me to drive her in my VW van to a facility 15 miles away in dense traffic.WTF!!...I refused & took her to the nearby emergency room.

Just to save a buck they will gladly endanger a kid or anyone else..

Effin Republican family values at work.
