Edwards' fall: From golden boy to sleazy tabloid tale

(CNN) -- -- John Edwards was once a political golden boy -- successful senator from the South, telegenic, rich trial lawyer, but a spokesman for the poor, elected to the U.S. Senate in his first run for public office.

2004 Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry picked him as his running mate, calling Edwards "a man who understands and defends the values of America."

He's a classic example of someone who knew he playing around with a loaded gun, yet he pulled the trigger while it was pointed at his own foot anyway.

I hope he's learned a thing or two along the way. Like, Don't cheat on your cancer stricken wife, and don't deny you're the father of your mistresses baby when you know you are. Americans can get over infidelity. Infidelity to your terminally ill wife is harder, but still possible. Saying you're not the babies daddy when you are is the stuff tabloid television ratings are based on.

Pretty made made every wrong choice along the way.

I remember some tv talk show he was on with Elizabeth during the primaries. The host (don't remember who) brought out Wendy's for them at the end because that was their anniversary tradition.

Sad to think that he may have been cheating on her at that time (or would soon thereafter).

Seemed like such a romantic, storybook marriage.

Why can't these big dogs keep it in their pants? I read somewhere Edwards was kind of unstable about the prospect of some jail time, this is truly tragic.
