2. What is that supposed to mean?
Apparently, you know little about what is going on in Europe right now.

While we citizens do nothing to defend our meager democratic institutions, Europeans are rejecting neo-liberal austerity and privacy measures.

5. You can't just comment on an OP without knowing what it's about.
This isn't slashdot, you know.

13. Come on, Google is your friend. Every OP shouldn't have to
deliver the entire history of European labor politics and the debt crisis on a covered dish so that you don't look silly when you go off half-cocked.

20. But I made my comment based on the history of European labor politics.
The OP says this is about something else.

7. These protests - this solidarity - is how they keep their govts from ignoring them
so, seems like their example indicates if people want to change things here, they have to protest - in an effective way - which, in Europe, involves strikes - it's not enough to say you won't accept something.

you have to find a way to exert power - and the way working people exert power is by refusing to let the wealthy use the infrastructure the working and middle class maintain and fuel by their labor to function.

and that's why nothing good is happening for the working and middle class in the U.S. at this time - the politicians are not afraid of the American voter - or, rather, they're only "afraid" of those who coincidentally reinforce right wing policies.

:scared: ooh, scary! 30 Rush Limbaugh look-alikes in lawn chairs!

10. Hey, I'm all for protests. I think we should definitely try this here.
(Where we have some very good reasons for being upset.)

15. Same thing going on over there as here -- it's just that they have the balls to fight back
The bankers stole the money. Their now trying to balance the budget on the backs of working people, take away social benefits, smash the unions, and privatize the infrastructure. It's just that they have the balls to fight back. Americans are too busy being mezmerized by junk TV and stuffing their faces with junk food.

16. Maybe there's a connection between their historically better benefits
and their willingness to fight for themselves.

You know the old saw about "American citizens fear their government. The French government fears its citizens."

8. S. Europeans are terribly oppressed since that American General Marshal imposed his ruthless plan
Those Northerners really controlled all the wealth. Maybe some factions in Southern Europe should raid a military base and begin armed rebellion.

I am sure the world with sympathize with their plight.

21. LOL
d'oh. just... d'oh.

interesting little factoid, tho - western Europeans have more social mobility than Americans - who pretend their lack of a social safety net means they'll be gabizilionoids one day...

while the reality of America's economic life indicates that is one bald-faced lie.

you have to wonder about the people in America who are so f-ing stupid they vote to keep themselves in worse economic condition than other western European nations - it's almost like... they're uninformed, or they've been fed a bowl of Fox News shit and they lap it up.

Or they're clanish and think that everyone has family members who can bail out each other in times of crisis and give them a job - but we see that's not really the route for most people - that's the route for people like George W.

If I had an entire nation that could bail out my business, I guess I would feel entitled to fuck over everyone else as prez too - since I'd would've never had one damn clue what it means to actually need a living wage and all that.

Daddy's titty babies like George W. make me want to puke. but that's sort of beside the point.

so, yeah, let's invade Canada and ask them to bring the U.S. up to the standards of the rest of the civilized world when we lose.

25. Yeh. There really are factions in the US that have more reason to protest than those Europeans

But the mind control here is a little more effective.

27. The reason, again, Europeans have a better social safety net
and a stronger economy is that they don't have many republicans who can get elected.

the liberal parties in Europe are conservative there - and one other MAJOR factor that makes it easier for western European nations to create better govt - they don't have a large number of religious right conservatives and anyone who wanted to try to teach religion in a science classroom would not have any say in any science curriculum and no one would waste their time letting such idiots bring frivolous claims to teach such bullshit...

instead, those in the U.S. who spend their time trying to force god onto other people here would be spending their time in Europe mobilizing for tax increases on the top 5% in those nations - again, unlike here, where the religious right is nearly uniform in acting as toadies to the powerful b/c they're so deluded by lying sacks of shit who preach voodoo economics from the fucking pulpit.

European protests seem to have a little more bite to them also. More strikes and less politeness.

I noticed they DO expect demonstrations. Maybe a general strike based around the timing of this conference?
