5. they are asking for no more clothes.
They have too many.

Some are asking for diapers, formula, etc. Others are asking for used scrubs for the med units to wear. Clothes is what they have too much of-for now.

2. First I thought it said Japan. So many disasters. :(
I gave a couple of times for Japan, then once for Alabama, the local food bank, it is just so sad. This year sucks.

6. It does.
A town in the neighboring county from here was hit yesterday. It was a strong EF2 according to prelim, though they said it could be a three. It took out two trailer courts.

7. Already donated, but thanks for keeping this in our awareness,
Glad that you didn't get hit by anything passing through our state yesterday. Had tornadoes touch down within a few miles of me yesterday, but only got hit with huge winds, rain, etc.

It finally looks like we're going to catch a break this weekend, with clear skies and decent temps. I can finally finish mowing my yard, so I can start mowing on my yard.

Have a great Memorial Day.

9. I mowed last week.
I'm mowing tomorrow. It grew that fast.

I didn't get hit but we've heard about Sedalia. I helped make boxes today for them-most of the damage happened in the trailer courts as you leave town and some families were said to have lost everything. A friend has a few people she knows staying with her since they have nowhere else to go.

I have a sinking feeling that this isn't over.

8. How does United Way use the money?
Do they have administrators who get a salary? (that's not a 'bad' thing necessarily - b/c the administrators have contacts and knowledge of how to mobilize ~ well, mebbe FEMA should have all that covered, I dunno....)

The people of Joplin need support, no doubt. I want to give some of my money to help THEM - the people of Joplin, Mo.

(Hey, I'm a Catholic who appreciates the good ~and , yes, there was a lot of good in my Catholic education ~ who doesn't want to give my $$$$ to pay for pedophilia (sp?) lawsuits/awards.)

10. I would rather give my money to the United Way than Red Cross,
They have less of a bureaucracy, and the money is specifically targeted at relief for Joplin residents.

12. I'd rather send donations directly to agencies in Joplin
I don't trust United Way in the least.

13. Actually, in this case I trust them explicitly.
I know Tim Rich, the guy who is Executive Director at the Central Missouri United Way. He is an honest, upfront, trustworthy person who I've known and trusted for twenty years.

20. We've had some good things come out of our small local too.
The money usually goes exactly where it should, with rare exceptions of some last minute happening.

When we donate (or have it automatically taken from our paychecks) they give us a list of every organization on their list for assistance that year. The rare instances would be in case of, for example, a natural disaster. The amount they originally promised to give the organization helping with it is increased, which might decrease the amount for something else.

21. What percent do they spend on administration?
I don't question WHERE they send the money they send to charities. It's HOW MUCH they send. Some United Way branches keep as much as 80-90% for administration.

22. I can't quote it off the top of my head
but I know it's much lower. It's known around here to be lower then Red Cross in my town. RC is a gaping suckhole of funding around here and almost none of it stays in the area. I can understand why you don't like UW if that's how they are up there.

Check out the Facebook links I posted. A few of them had other places directly in Joplin posting their needs.

11. With the post above
(and on the website too somewhere, I believe) they've stated that for Joplin there is no overhead and all will go to them.

I could see this link being on the up-and-up, compared to others. The United Way linked to is one in Central Missouri, so they should do their best to keep all the donations in-state.

Also, if looking for other things to donate to, check out the other links I posted. If you have facebook they have relief pages that list charities, wants and needs, and even how to volunteer.

15. Will there be some sort of verifiable accounting?
That's not too much too ask, really.

Do any of these rash 'give money to help this current emergency' EVER have/show any sort of accountancy?

Remember 9/11 and Laura Bush asking school children to send in a dollar to the White House to help the victims of 9/11. I'm SURE a WHOLE LOTTA people/school children sent in their $1. How much was collected? Where did it go?

16. Um, I don't know?
If it concerns you that much, please go to the website, get the phone number, and call it during business hours.

I'm not an employee of the UW. I can't tell you everything they will do. What I do know is that they tend to be reputable, compared to some that are already making the rounds. And compared to RC, which I used to volunteer for, they tend to pass more of their resources on.

18. My question is: How do you KNOW that UNITED WAY is 'reputable'
reputable meaning that MOST of the money that you & I give will go to the help the victims/survivors of this natural disaster?

How do you know that? How do you *know* that some BOSSHOG somewhere isn't 'sucking it all up from us 'tender-hearted suckers'?

19. I know my local is reputable.
I know the people involved with my local. I know how they dole out their funds. And a poster in this thread knows the person involved with the chapter listed and can vouch for them. I've also heard good things about the Columbia United Way chapter.

If you don't like it then why respond? Call them and ask them. It's not my job to do it for you.

If you don't want to donate to them then don't.

14. Sweet!
Another hundred bucks heading to Joplin, from someone who used to watch its TV stations on cable in Berryville, Ark. (the region is called the "Four States") when he spent some youthful summers out there.
