Mail carrier who defecated in yard gets to keep job
PORTLAND, Ore. - A mail carrier who was caught using a yard as his personal toilet will not be fired.

The incident happened last month at a home in southeast Portland and a neighbor, Don Derfler, captured the man in the act with his camera.

Derfler had been waiting for his babysitter when he saw his mailman acting odd at his neighbor's house across the street. The postal worker then pulled down his pants and that's when Derfler began snapping pictures.

"We trust people like the postal service and meter readers and people of that nature," Derfler told us when we interviewed him in April. "To come on to our property and to defecate - it's just wrong."

But hey, sometimes, you just gotta go NOW! Maybe it was a crap in the yard or crap in his pants decision he had to make.

12. I think that that is a perfectly rational response.
It is not like you could be expected to apprehend someone doing that, because they could pick up the shit and throw it at you, and really, the shit could be considered a biological weapon, germ warfare.

8. I assume
that you've never had to take a bowel movement in an inappropriate place before. It's not pretty, no one is saying it is, but on occasion, human beings have to take a crap, and sometimes, we get sick and need to take a crap.

The person with the problem is the one taking the pictures. If the guy was a serial "defacator" or something, that would be one thing, but a guy taking a shit because he absolutely has to do so is hardly a menace to society.

38. The post office is so extreme in the demands it make on its mail carriers that
Edited on Fri May-27-11 11:58 AM by tblue37
they actually once fired a woman because an efficiency expert said she could finish her route faster if she would just take longer strides when she walked.

A person's stride is not easily changed, and lengthening one's stride past the point of comfort can cause serious hip problems. But the woman "wouldn't" (my guess is couldn't) lenghten her stride as they demanded she do, so they fired her.

When I read the article about this situation some years ago, I tried an experiment: I tried to walk for a while with a slightly lenghtened stride. Since I used to walk quite a lot for fun and exercise, I had plenty of opportunities to try it out, but I had to give it up after part of a day, because it was so painful, and the pain lasted for a couple of days beyond my experiment.

If the mail carrier was afraid of losing time on his route, he might have postponed using a toilet until he really could not avoid going immediately. Since the PO is so extreme in its demands about route times, I can imagine soemthing like that happening!

7. What kind of a jerk do you have to be
to take pictures of someone taking a shit out of necessity? It speaks volumes about the person taking the pictures, far more than it does about the person that took care of a biological necessity.

9. Years ago, my mother had an emergency like that.
She was racing home in her car to beat the diarrhea. A cop stopped her for speeding. She was so flustered, she gave him her bowling league card instead of her drivers license. Then she messed her pants. Then she cried.

The cop let her go.

My brothers laughed. I did not.

You've never had a sudden attack of "got to go" while in an inconvenient place? If that's the case I envy you. It isn't a pleasant experience.

I highly doubt that the carrier just decided to take a "crap" in the middle of his route because he felt like it. :eyes:

If you are suggesting he should have just let it go in his pants and let it run down his leg you're wrong.

14. How sad, that someone who's home during the day doesn't know the mail carrier well enough. . .
that the carrier could ask them if they could use their toilet.

I work out of my home so I make a point to know my carrier. I offer them cold drinks on hot days, hot drinks when it's cold, and cookies when my wife's in a baking mood. And yes, on one occasion, a carrier asked if she could use our toilet.

For my little touches of kindness, I get back happy smiles every afternoon when the mail arrives, a friendly word or two if we meet at the door, and an occasional touch of extra service when my carrier sees a way to extend themselves for my benefit.

But most of all, I make a human connection, and each of us knows there's a person on both sides of the door. How much more rewarding that is over furtively snapping incriminating photos of an embarrassing act of probable desperation.

17. Not everyone has a regular mail carrier
so maybe the neighbor didn't know whether this was anti-social behavior or a have to go situation. My area seems to be a training ground for postal carriers. We continually have someone new, we never get to know them. I'm not excusing the neighbor just saying ....

23. I agree.
When my daughter was 4, it was the highlight of her day to meet the carrier at the mailbox and bring in the mail. The day before her first day of kindergarten, there was a knock on my door at noon. It was the carrier with a balloon and a stuffed animal to thank her for being there every day with a smile.

24. Sometimes there's a downside
to letting 'em use the toilet.

My last job I worked in a very small office where there were just me and a part time bookkeeper who left at noon each day. The boss was out of the office a lot, which he was on this particular day.

The UPS guy came in and asked if he could use our bathroom. Unisex. He uses it and then leaves quickly.

It didn't take long for the stink to creep out from down the hall and through a large empty office into the front office. He must have had a case of the raging pickled eggs and beer shits.

Anyway, the bookkeeper left. Not long after that the boss came back. The place still stunk.

Since I was the only one there, he assumed I was the one who created the foul atmosphere and gave me some strange looks the rest of the day.

I was caught in a dilemma. Admit to the boss that the bookkeeper and I had let an outsider use our toilet...or take the blame.

I figured it would be easier to take the blame.

32. Hey!
You never know when another under-ware bomber or a crop-dusting frog-man might show up around YOUR place! Best to have the camera and every other loadable device locked and loaded, along with plenty of duct tape and plastic wrap. I wonder if the photographer captured the grandeur and greatness of the moment and paid attention to the rules of good artistic composition?

21. My husband is a carrier.
And has had this happen to him. And it's an ugly horrid experience to be a block and 1/2 away from your vehicle and then God knows how far away from a gas station and have an attack of uncontrollable diarrea.

The guy who took the picture is a complete jack ass.

I wonder for all in this thread who think this is so funny;can you tell me what your solution would be in this situation?

27. One of the worst feelings...
is intestinal cramping from diarrhea.

I used to have it a lot from IBS. It would come out of the blue, and it was awful. Not too horrible if you're home or at least someplace where you're comfortable using the facilities for that purpose.

Absolute HELL when you're traveling.

It left me doubled over in pain lots of times.

39. Most people do not let strangers into their homes these days--and
even nextdoor neighbors often don't know each other well enough to be allowed bathroom privileges in one another's homes. He probably didn't feel he knew his route residents well enough to ask.

29. My brother-in-law was going through chemo
and was on the inside lanes of the Garden State Parkway, with his wife driving him home through traffic. He got horrible diarrhea, and had to go out of the car, because they were stuck in a traffic jam. There was no place private to go, and he wouldn't have made it anyway. He opened his door, she opened the back door and he went. Cars were right there on both sides because on the other side of the guard rail were the outside lanes. People were pretty kind, no one said anything.

Lack of sensitivity and unkindness are a hallmark of much of our society. I might laugh if it happened to me, but not to someone else. You never know their situation and it is one of the worst feelings in the world: to have cramps and no where to go.
