A Cornered Animal Is A Dangerous Animal
Is it all a big bluff??

<snip>
Public polling, the NY-26 outcome, and other objective indicators make it clear Republicans have boxed themselves into a political corner with their plan to end Medicare. It's a big problem for them politically, and there's no easy way out, especially since virtually every Republican in Congress is now on the record, with a vote, that they favor gutting Medicare.

So how are they gonna get out of this jam? Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) just made it clear in a briefing with reporters on the Hill: They're going to hold the government's debt limit as hostage in order to back their way out of this political tight spot.

How? McConnell just announced he will not support raising the debt ceiling unless big Medicare cuts are part of the deal. Translation: Unless Democrats get us off the hook by agreeing to deep Medicare cuts (meaning Democrats can no longer attack Republicans for wanting to eliminate Medicare), then we're going to force the federal government into default on its debt.

Isn't that a Republican motto?

Personally speaking.
I am due beer and travel money and many experiences.

How about a movie scene. Martin Short trying to rob a bank.

(It is actually a really good movie, and yea, I know those who have not listened to the fact that I am due beer and travel money, will try to find some correlation, but really it is a good movie on the effects of failures of society to properly run society, and what will be seen all over the place if you take away peoples abilities to care for there families, work, and have health care and education. People in hardship will get some very expert assistance from those that are paid up and free and clear. Because they are servants not of only a few, but all people. It does have some great metaphors though, his past crime robbing from double seven banks, Darth as the cop, Martin short being in the movie Merlin, and many other great metaphors in that movie.)

3. I thnk this is their strategy to get the Medicare monkey off their backs..
If they can get some major concessions from Democrats on Medicare, then they can point to the Ryan plan as the first step in putting pressure on the Dems to negotiate those changes. It's a lie but might work politically.

Meh. Republicans can play the game theory madman role all they want at this point. But everybody knows the hostage has a get out of jail free card. The Republican fund raising base, the real Republican base - not the abortion fanatics, the christianists or the bigots - will never allow them to voluntarily turn the economy over like a cop car in a riot.

No, the Chamber of Commerce crowd will have the final say in this question, and they'll only extend the leash to the GOP as long as no real economic damage will accrue. As soon as they see the potential for revenue losses, it will end, not with a default, but with a whimper...
