Tell the State Department: Stop the Canadian tar sands pipeline

Canadian company TransCanada wants to build a nearly 2,000 mile pipeline across the US, to carry toxic, corrosive oil from the tar sands mines in Alberta, Canada to oil refineries in Texas.

If the US State Department approves the project, the spill-prone pipeline would endanger homes and farmland in six states, and even worse, Nebraska's Ogallala Aquifer, which provides 30% of our nation's agricultural water, and drinking water to millions.

TransCanada could be getting some high-powered help; from the notorious, tea-party funding, oil billionaire Koch brothers, who, as one of the largest purchasers of Canadian crude, stand to make a windfall if this dangerous pipeline is approved.1

Tell the State Department: Protect Americans, not TransCanada and the Koch brothers. Stop the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Submit a public comment now.

Producing the tar sands oil has been called the most environmentally destructive project on earth2 and has already chewed up vast areas of Canadian wilderness, transforming it into a wasteland of toxic lakes and open pit mines.

Now, American lands and waters are threatened as well. Pumping this extra thick and corrosive petroleum causes pipelines to rupture far more frequently than when transporting conventional oil, and tar sands oil spills are already tragically frequent.

In September, 250,000 gallons spilled outside of Chicago. In April of this year, a 1.3 million gallon spill in Alberta, and an 840,000 gallon spill in Michigan. On May 7th, yet another spill in North Dakota. NRDC reports 11 spills from the existing Keystone system just in the last 12 months alone.3

The Keystone XL pipeline - which would be the third and largest dedicated tar sands pipeline - would cross six states, a vast swath of America's breadbasket and wildlife habitat, and numerous crucial rivers and aquifers - exposing the area to inevitable spills of corrosive, toxic tar sands oil.
