A free press is good for democracy. Any group bent on dialing back democracy goes first for the pres

When Hitler was named chancellor, one of his very first acts against the then-liberal bastion, Berlin, was to abolish virtually all of the fifty-some newspapers that existed.

This act pissed off the residents and there was civil unrest, albeit of short duration, given the brutality of the new regime.

This is easy enough to avoid for any self respecting group bent on dialing back democracy more quietly, more neatly.

Buy the media and quietly control it. Edit very carefully the content. Allow it to appear free but compliant.

Much like the American press of the early 21st Century.

I think that after observing Watergate, TPTB set out to and did acquire effective control of the national-capable press as a defensive measure. Then, when they saw how powerful that control could be, they naturally turned it to offensive uses, which are necessary to ram through policies that are widely and deeply unpopular with large majorities of Americans.

It isn't easy for a ruler out there.

3. It is within the last ten years they've shown they now have complete control

The trend was there, but was coincidental with (or more likely the reason for) a man totally unqualified to be president, in fact, was.
