Edited on Sun May-29-11 08:09 AM by Stuart G
Why Drive Defensively?

I believe that one in eight drivers .. yes that many.
are distracted or driving while impared..
... in one way or another. Yea, one in eight. Here is the list:

1. Drunk or high on booze.
2. Stoned on pot
3. Using Illegal drugs of some other kind that dumbs them out
4. Using prescription drugs that dumbs them out..yea, lots of people use them
5. Not enough sleep...this one puts a person into a category like the first 4
6. Texting while driving
7. Talking on phone that impares driving
8. fooling around with a gadget that takes the eys off the road
9. eating while driving
l0. Yelling or carrying on some kind of very heated conversation that takes the eyes or mind off the road

.etc..you add as many as you can..

3. I believe that #5 is very important because so many
people are very tired from lack of good sleep, worried about so much these days. We take driving so much for granted, that we
fail to realize that the car is a machine not an appendage

2. I don't drive defensively most of the time
that doesn't mean I do any of the things on the list- except occasionally eating while driving, but I don't see that not doing those things is driving defensively. It's just driving sanely. And the reason I don't drive defensively is I generally drive on sparsely traveled roads and it just doesn't take the same kind of hyperalertness that driving in high traffic places does.

4. I bet you still drive
defensively. When you come up to an intersection and there is another car there I bet you keep an eye on it just to make sure he doesn't pull out in front of you.

6. My guess is that you are correct.
How many people will be injured or worse this weekend from these mistakes? And how many could have been prevented?
