What Happened When Westboro Baptist Decided To Protest in Joplin, Missouri?
Posted May 30th, 2011 by Evan Hurst
Westboro Baptist decided to protest at a large memorial for all the victims of the tornado in Joplin, Missouri, at which President Obama was in attendance. What happened? Enter our commenter Troy, a resident of Joplin:

I live in Joplin, Mo. today the president came and visited our city that was destroyed by this tornado!! We all heard the Westboro idiots were coming to protest! And so did about three hundred bikers!! The bikers all showed up and parked across the street from the University where Obama held a ceremony for the many good people, friends and family we lost!! The only report of any Westboro people actually being there was one guy strolling through all the bikers, when they found out who he was it got ugly for him real quick his shirt got torn off and he was pushed around pretty good! When the police saw what was about to happen they grabbed him and tried to push the bikers back!! Then they told the guy “run you stupid mother fucker” And I am quoting!! :) We heard that more of them were blocked at a local truck stop by a few awesome truckers!! They pinned them in until it was over, not sure about this one just what we were hearing!! You may think of bikers as mean or lawless but when it comes to things like this they really step up!!! p.s. most of the bikes were flying the American flag!!!!!

1. Good for the bikers
The time has passed for these morons who think protesting funerals and memorial services is either godly or patriotic. They are evil and mean spirited.

3. Getting people to assault them or infringe upon their rights is how WBC makes their money.
Who ever ripped-off the guy's shirt just financed their next few protests.

5. These Westboro people might seem like idiots
but I would be very surprised if a lone Westboro type would just casually wade through a bunch of bikers without someone covering him with a video camera.

21. Yep, Fred Phelps and all of the Phelps children are lawyers. They will sue anybody they can make a

buck off of no matter how frivolous the charge. One of the things they try to do is find ways in which to sue corporations, and state and local governments, any entity with a lot of cash.

They will probably sue the city of Joplin for negligence to protect them from the bikers and truckers now.

13. Does anyone else here think it's a bad thing when violent thugs shut down free speech?
Even if it's noxious free speech?

I certainly do, because such things come back around
to bite us later.

27. All Americans have the choice to make wise decisions or poor
decisions the Westborough church is making more and more poor decisions. They have the right to free speech but they will eventually cross the lines of someone....again I don't condone violence, but if they showed up at my families funeral or memorial I would have a problem.

28. It has *NOTHING* to do with good choices or bad choices.
Edited on Tue May-31-11 12:43 PM by Tesha
It has to do with whether or not people support the
use of violence (or the threat of violence) to suppress
speech they don't like.

Many folks, even many folks here at DU, obviously do
support such suppression. But no one who stands by
this position ever has the right to complain again about
being herded off to "Free Speech Zones"; after all, that's
what's being cheered here in this thread. :(

23. Sounds like a great group!
From everything I have read, they form a physical barrier but don't engage in assault. Someone stupid enough to walk right into the middle of them, though, at the very least should expect to be removed.

24. Since when is it legal to block public ways or even to touch a person to prevent their travel...
...on a public way?

Why should anyone "expect to be removed"?

Bonus question: since when do democrats support Brownshirts?

29. Shit, that happened to me last week - for taking photographs on the street!
Edited on Tue May-31-11 02:31 PM by Cronus Protagonist
5 people, count 'em, FIVE people got in my way and prevented me leaving the scene where I simply took some pictures on the public sidewalk to support a complaint I'm preparing.

One of them was an off-duty cop. One of them physically attacked me for trying to simply walk away. I got handcuffed and put in the back of a police car while the idiots made their case to the police.... "but but but he was taking photographs of us!"

Of course, the cops let me go because I did not break the law. What about the five people who attacked me? NOTHING.

Welcome to (the REAL) America.

15. One of my lifetimes best friends younger brother is one of the bikers
Chad, my friend, passed away in a memorial day accident about ten years ago. His younger brother who is a gulf war1 Vet is one of the Bikers who follow those idiots around and intimidates them, mostly just drowns them out with their motorcycles exhaust. Where ever the westboro idiots go so go they.

always works like a charm. :eyes:

We get all bent out of shape when the right wing thugs throw people to the ground doing a peaceful dancing protest at the Jefferson Memorial, yet we cheer on bikers who assault a westboro halfwit.

Hypocrisy thy name.

25. If we don't believe in free expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.
If you believe in freedom of speech, you believe in freedom of speech for views you don't like. Goebbels was in favor of freedom of speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you're in favor of freedom of speech, that means you're in favor of freedom of speech precisely for views you despise.

In Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media, 1992

******

I hate the Westboro Baptist Church and everything they stand for. They prey on people's pain for media attention, and that is warped and sick.

But, what they do is Constitutionally protected free speech.

If I don't want police horses riding roughshod (the origin of the term) over my anti-war protest, then I've got to be consistent and allow these scumbags their free speech rights too, much as I hate having to . . .

Americans have had it up to the neck with idiots like these nuts. I don't condone violence but to go to an event like this where fellow Americans have died is a bad decision.

Shall they get violent to shut us up?

Will that be okay with you?

Yes, WBC is a bunch of assholes, but violence to silence free speech isn't the answer. It's no better than the men who murdered the aid workers in Afghanistan over a burned Koran. We have to be better than that.
