Naomi Campbell: Cadbury Ad 'Insulting & Hurtful'
Naomi Campbell is considering "every option available," including a lawsuit, after Cadbury used her name to promote its new Bliss chocolate bar, the Independent UK reports.

The advertisement reads, "Move over Naomi, there's a new diva in town," with an image of the candy posed on a mound of diamonds. According to the Independent, Campbell said, "I am shocked. It's upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humour in this. It is insulting and hurtful." Her mother, Valerie Morris, explained, "I'm deeply upset by this racist advert. Do these people think they can insult black people and we just take it? This is the 21st century, not the 1950s. Shame on Cadbury."

1. Racist? Seriously?
That's pretty pathetic. I can understand Naomi not wanting her name used without permission, but to bring race into this is pretty disgusting.

It's leveraging Campbell's crappy and sometimes violent attitude, not her race.

2. I think they should have sought her approval before using her name...however she's reaching here
on the racism..

considering all the modelling work she has done that has incorporated using chocolate. But then again, UK is country still comfortable with using the word Golliwog, which is just as bad as the N'word here for black people. Cadburys should know and do better, but they were recently purchased by a US company, so who knows what is at play...

47. Agreed, she is indeed a diva.
I did not even cone close to making the coobectipn between her skin color and chocolate until she brought it up. It was rude for Kraft to use her name without permission though - doubt she can copyright her first name, so she appears SOL.

6. Where the hell does it say "Campbell" in that ad?
It's the height of narcissism to assume that any time the name Naomi is mentioned it refers to her.

I would expect this from Palin, but then I'm guessing Campbell ain't a hell of lot smarter than she is.

15. for black people in the UK.., being likened to chocolate was as bad as being called a Golliwog..
Edited on Tue May-31-11 11:32 AM by HipChick
more from the article..an Americentric mind-set would not understand..
"for black people, being likened to chocolate was as bad as being called a Golliwog" - which is the equivalent of the N-Word in the UK...Racism in the playground starts with black children being called 'chocolate bar'. At best, this is insensitive, and at worst it demonstrates Cadbury's utter disregard for causing offence. Its lack of apology just adds insult to injury. The Eurocentric joke is not funny to black people.

"This issue is not just about the insult to Naomi Campbell. It's about how these companies treat black people in general. Part of the problem is that they don't see it as offensive."

The racism row comes just one week after a London School of Economics lecturer, Satoshi Kanazawa, hit the headlines for "research" claiming to show that black women are less attractive than those of other races.

and this is what a Golliwog looks like..this is a country that up until a few years ago, still had major food companies with Golliwog on their products..would be see food products with N*word here? I doubt it..

28. the one from charles taylor was a blood diamond
Edited on Tue May-31-11 11:43 AM by pitohui
she can't play it both ways

the name "naomi" is not her exclusive property, and most of us i think would consider it a jewish name, not a black name...so the slur if any exists could be more about the jewish princess/diva stereotype...not that that's right either but i don't see campbell's dog in the hunt

except...uh oh...that nasty stuff about taking diamonds from dictator/war criminal charles taylor -- so now i see, it's because of the pile of diamonds plus the name "naomi" that we can instantly identify it with campbell

in that case, the ad comes close to protected speech, since it's making a barbed political comment about campbell's dealings w. the dictator and war criminal

if i was campbell i would just STFU and hope the ad goes away quietly, i see nothing positive to her image that comes by "claiming" this insult

either it doesn't even refer to her in particular OR it refers to her dealings w. a war criminal, and i pick door #2

maybe people wouldn't make fun of your blood diamonds, lady, if you hadn't taken blood diamonds, ever think about that?

From the site:

The allegations

1998: Aide Georgina Galanis claims Campbell hit her over the head. The model pleaded guilty and paid undisclosed damages.

2000: Vanessa Frisbee accused Campbell of throwing a plate at her. The model denied it and sued for a breach of contract.

2001: Assistant Simone Craig claimed she had been kept hostage by the model, who denied the charge.

2004: Millicent Burton, a maid, accused Campbell of slapping her. The model said Ms Burton started it.

2005: Assistant Amanda Brack claims she was slapped and beaten with a BlackBerry device. The model denied violence.

2005: Yvonne Scio, actress and friend, claims Campbell punched and kicked her in a Rome hotel. The model denied violence.

2006: Housekeeper Ana Scolavino alleges she suffered a head wound when Campbell threw her mobile phone at her.

Someone needs to go to time-out...

And think it's pathetic playing the race card simply because one can? Or feel that ridiculous stunts like this detract from the calls of very real racism people experience every day? How sickening that a liberal audience would think that way.
