Would you ever want to see John Kerry as President?
Not in 2012, but perhaps in 2016?

Don't get me wrong - Hillary would make a great President. And I say this as a pacifist, a liberal and someone who hates the DLC. She's a good boss, period. I've known several people who have worked under her and all of them agree that she is an excellent boss: never micromanages, lets her employees act on their own, etc.

But I do think Kerry would still make a fine President.

35. I don't mean forward as in forward-thinking.
And I do agree, he'd be good. What I mean, as far as being worried about 2016, is that I see the Democratic candidates causing the same sort of ho-hum reaction that the Republican candidates are in 2012. I'm not talking about serious policy here, I'm talking about the lame, but all too real, necessities of the American political campaign.

It's a recruiting arm for the CIA, but John Kerry is not in the CIA

Chances are, he was probably tapped for the CIA, but unless his VVAW work was some undercover op - I don't think Kerry is CIA

29. By "fingers in everything" what do you mean?
Edited on Tue May-31-11 06:45 PM by Taverner
Yes, the CIA has been host to more than one atrocities. The Chilean Coup of 9/11/73 comes to mind. The assassination of Arbenz is another.

But I have long since abandoned the 'CIA Secretly Rules the World' conspiracy theory.

JFK was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald, as anti-climactic as that be

RFK was killed by Sirhan Sirhan, as anti-climactic as that be

MLK - we really don't know who killed him. There is so much reasonable doubt about James Earl Ray that I think we will never know. My personal opinion is that it was carried out by small group of Klansmen.

The CIA does have a habit of screwing things up, but if you want an agency with true carte blanche, look to the NSA. They're the ones who have been listening in on all radio, television and phone transmissions world wide. But even then, they are looking for a needle in a haystack. Or rather hay in a needlestack.

-----------------------------------

Let me put it this way: when I was in the Peace Corps I did some work with the EPA*. At the time they were searching for sites for superfund cleanup. Many companies deliberately lied about what they did. Outside the US, where there were no rules, corporations did as they pleased, without hindrance. Think Bhopal.

My friends in the EPA told me that it was not a conspiracy, per se, but many cases of corporations not following any regulations, and leaving the result for the locals to tend with. I saw this happen regularly in Thailand.

There was a "river" in Khon Kaen, where I lived, that had an artificial blue color to it. Kids would swim in it because they knew there were no Liver Flukes in it. Of course, that was because it was so toxic, NOTHING could live in it. When asked where the pollution came from, they would just point to the chemical companies doing work there.

They just dumped randomly, without care for the results.

This was common.

It is not a conspiracy, unfortunately.

I say unfortunately because if it were conspiracy, we could find the bastards and go after them. No, it is a world-wide laxing (or plain disregard) for any environmental safety standards. And when shit happens, it happens.

-------------------------------------------------------

* The EPA was not doing any superfund activity in Thailand, but I was researching what they did, as to suggest to the local Thai authorities. As you might guess, this went nowhere.

53. That's actually a really interesting idea.
I think the perfect Dem candidate for 2016 would come from outside the Obama administration and D.C. in general (i.e. no one from Congress, and no former govs who took jobs in the administration.) O'Malley fits the bill to a tee.

Mind you, it's not that I think the Obama administration will be foundering by 2016. It's just that voters like a change.

28. No, he'll be too old. He will be about 73 in 2016. Remember the guy
so many like to call 'McGramps'?

John McCain was about 72 in 2008, and some here said he was too old then - and even now suggesting he retire.

If one is too old at 72, the other is too old at 73.

32. Yes, obviously.
Kerry has more intelligence and integrity in his little finger than the entire pathetic republican field has in their whole ugly bodies! Think of it in terms of individual contests:

Who is better, Kerry or Bachmann?

Who is better, Kerry or Palin?

Who is better, Kerry or Giuliani?

Who is better, Kerry or Perry?

Who is better, Kerry or Romney?

Who is better, Kerry or Gingrich?

All of these questions have the exact same answer: "Duh! Kerry."

42. Incidentally, in 2004 Kerry was the oldest democratic nominee (other than re-elections) since 1876
Republicans have put forth some older nominees--Other than shrub, Nixon, and Goldwater, all of their nominees since at least Eisenhower have been in their 60s or 70s. But other than Truman in his re-election bid and FDR running for his fourth term, Kerry was the oldest Democratic nominee since (I think) Samuel Tilden in 1876.

44. He wasn't my first choice in 2004, but he's okay in my book. Doubt he'll run, tho.
Democrats rarely nominated anyone over age 60. We keep waiting for Bobby to return... Clinton & Obama merely being fashion-savvy reincarnations of Bobby (both elected in their mid-40s). I reckon the next nominee will be between 45 & 53 years of age and will run on concrete themes like "hope" and "honesty" and "staying true to our values as Americans" or some variation thereof.

How old will Clair McCaskle be in 2016? I think she's spot on, although I bet we go for a governor instead that year. It's hard to see it now, but I fear we'll be talking about "Obama fatigue" around 2015. We're too fickle as a people to swoon over any single pol for too long. I love Joe Biden, but I'll bet his inevitable campaign in 2016 won't take off.
