(video)GOP: House Republicans Have Privately Discussed Impeaching Obama Over Debt Ceiling
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/07/07/262884/pete-olson-impeachment-debt/

st month, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner suggested that the debt ceiling is unconstitutional because of Section 4 of the 14th Amendment, which states that “the validity of the public debt of the United States…shall not be questioned.” If the Obama administration were to embrace this view, the country could avoid default in the event that the debt ceiling is not raised by the Aug. 2 deadline.

Republicans, who would lose an opportunity to inflict major budget cuts if the debt ceiling is declared unconstitutional, have been highly critical of the idea. Yesterday, Huffington Post’s Amanda Terkel reported that Rep. Tim Scott (R-SC) said it would be “an impeachable act” if President Obama declares the debt ceiling is unconstitutional.

ThinkProgress spoke with one of Scott’s colleagues, Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX), today about the matter. Olson told us that others in the GOP caucus are also discussing impeachment and that Scott is “not a lonely voice” on the issue:

1. Then why didn't they impeach George W Bush when he raised
the debt ceiling 5 times in office! Oh right...double standards.

2. Let them fall into the briar patch.
It would be stopped in the Senate. And they would lose the support of the American People. It would mostly like
insure the return of Democratic control to the house. The people want jobs and economic recovery, not impeachment.

4. I encourage all to watch the video. That is a man who is playing with some very hot fire.
Again, this is not a game, it's terribly dangerous. And there in the video you can see this maniac calmly discussing "learning as we go along". That's concerning if not very frightening. And hopefully, it's all bluff. If not, they'll collectively and individually regret their choice on the deepest possible levels.

5. Looks like Obama gets impeached...
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 05:01 PM by Davis_X_Machina
...either way.

Why any intelligent person wants the job is beyond me.

I can see a non-entity like Bush II, being hot for the White House. but this is different.

6. The country does not support the impeachment of Obama.
This Kennedy Killer(a.k.a right winger from Texas) is playing a dangerous game, one that will backfire on the GOP come 2012.

The Senate is controlled by Democrats, they can easily reject the charges.

9. It beats working on governing the country
The Republicans get elected to office to pay back their fatcat bankrollers, and monkeywrench any governmental action that doesn't advance their interests. If they can waste months with an impeachment circus, all the better.

11. I would be cautious about recommending that Obama resort to a "nuclear option"
However, OTOH allowing the country's economy to be messed over by the irresponsible actions of a major political party with one truly humongous axe to grind isn't an option either, so if push comes to shove, somebody responsible has to step up to the plate and do what needs to be done to prevent this country from defaulting. The Republicans raised the debt ceiling without all of the theatrics (none, actually) while Bush was (P)resident and the Democrats, while they protested raising the debt ceiling in 2006, they didn't threaten to filibuster and cause a default until certain conditions were met. There's no particular reason why Congress can't raise the debt ceiling on the condition that the parties continue working on some kind of comprehensive deficit reduction plan. It's one thing to say that we need to start finding our ways to pay for our borrowing/spending (though it would be nice if fiscal responsibility wasn't only demanded whenever a Democrat is in the WH and ignored when a Republican is in the WH but that's just how Republican Tea Party hypocrisy works, of course) but you do that AFTER you've prevented an economic catastrophe- though there's nothing the GOP likes more than rushing through bad ideas and policies in the midst of a "crisis", even if it's one that they themselves manufactured (actually, ESPECIALLY if it's something they manufactured :puke:).
If Obama does have to resort to utilizing the "nuclear option" to keep the economy from crashing down around (all of) us, I don't think that the public is going to call for Obama's head and an impeachment conducted against Obama will go nowhere IMHO. Considering the dire consequences of failing to raise the debt ceiling and the dwindling amount of time with which to reach an agreement, it's a really awful time to have to craft together a sane proposal under that kind of pressure.

13. Obama should declare it unconstitutional on principle.
It's a ridiculous concept anyway.
