Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 04:23 PM by Hubert Flottz
"I'm afraid that if Obama is elected he will cut social security and medicare" and they told me then, that I was crazy. Today they called me and said they were sorry they both argued that I was wrong in 2008. They are not any happier than I am that I was right. They spent hours on the phone and going to rally after rally searching for votes for Mr. Obama. Hauled people out to vote on election day in 2008. They are heartbroken and demoralized. I am too.

4. Bad news for Dems? Maybe. Ugly news for the American people? Definitely.
Edited on Mon Jul-11-11 04:28 PM by CakeGrrl
Low turnout favors R's, on record with actually, FOR REAL wanting to do away with SS and Medicare and keeping money in the pockets of the rich.

If people are fooled again into defaulting it to the Repubs, it could be the last time for some who are already on the brink.

People need to take Republican control away from the House. That's where this will all start.

6. I think it might too and the demoCONs will have nobody to blame but themselves.
I hate to see the country go belly up, but touching the "Third Rail" is something that will destroy Obama's shot at another term. I don't think enough republicans will vote for Obama to elect him in 2012 and it seems like the GOP is the only folks Obama is worried about taking care of.

Doesn't matter that he tried, we need results.
That "beer summit" he held in 2009 was a sign of how disconnected he really was to the situation in the rest of the country.

There's no way to generate the enthusiasm next year like we did in 2008 because we were up against the BFEE and McCain back then.
But now, after 3 years of broken promises and a series of unpopular compromises, we are screwed.

This "wishy washy" bullshit of always talking about giving away any of the advantages of having a safety net in this country, that we worked for as a party for over 75 years, is totally asinine.

The unions aren't going to be as energized.
The teachers unions have been dismantled.
And yet, Obama acts like it is sunny days ahead while talking about balancing the budget on grandma's back!!

credit it was great branding. Unfortunately it was political bullshit, but it worked.

I remember a discussion somewhere during the primaries when so many Democrats were all aflutter over the partisanship talk from Obama and they were asked what they were willing to compromise on to get that bipartisanship. The answer was 'nothing, Obama will talk everyone into seeing it his way.' I can only assume they believed that and it must be a terrible blow to find it isn't true.

59. I think the DU needs a new tab for "Dems against Dems" or something
Every thread runs longer than the next with these drawn out redundant statements and conversations -- making the thread seem to be "on fire."

Any "news" thread is quickly inundated with negative opinions, conjecture, and speculation. Even typically democratic-themed threads on unionism or women's rights turn quickly to in-fighting as antagonists swarm here.

I've learned to ignore (not using the feature) and quickly move on to find the 'meat' of the subject and facts...but it is becoming more of a challenge.

I feel baited on every thread, and that seems to be purposeful to divide us.

as I wrote way back when

Feb. 8 - Got a call from Congresswoman Jenkins today, a telephone town hall. I noticed that when one caller asked about a COLA for social security that Jenkins blamed that on Obama. In fact the COLAs are set automatically by a law passed in 1983. There were at least three bills to provide a COLA - HR 3536, HR 3672, and HR 4429, but Jenkins did not co-sponsor any of them.

I don't know if he hates old people or not, but he's lying when he says theres no inflation. Food has gone up, medicine has gone up, utilities, gasoline and the cost of living has gone up. Just because people get old don't mean they get stupid. The DLC will find out in 2012 I'm afraid.

So no COLA raises means that the old folks have already been lied to and ripped off. The people at the White House just got a cost of living raise. Is the White House the only place that the cost of living has gone up. So what will the government steal from the seniors next? Keep in mind that the seniors paid into these programs all their working lives.

36. We all knew the retirement age was going to be raised for SS, right? No matter who the
President was, we could see that coming. Either that or benefits being cut, but hopefully not both.

But it's the Medicare cuts that are surprising, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE STILL HAVE THAT COSTLY PROVISION IN MEDICARE ACT THAT PREVENTS US FROM NEGOTIATING PHARMACEUTICAL PRICES. That was a windfall for big pharm. Big pharma paid for it. It's time to get rid of that, which would save the program tons of $$$$.

Also, it looks bad, IMO, promising to cut SS in talks regarding the deficit, since Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit.

Silly to support people who use senior citizen's livelihoods as political bait to make backroom deals with republican extortionists.

Why can't these secret meetings be out in the open? Silly to think that every time the FED prints more cash with nothing to back it up, to pay for elective warfare, tax cuts for the wealthy and Wall Street and world bank bailouts, that it doesn't push the cost of living higher.

53. You seem to know it all, I don't understand why you're not a CEO by now.
I'm about as close to being a trust fund kid as I am to being the fuckin' pope. I grew up in a West Virginia coal camp. My Dad died wanting to know if I was getting his Social Security claim sorted out because the SS doctors under Reagan had determined that even though he was dying from stage four lung cancer, that he was able to go back to work the following monday morning at nonUnion Carbide. A few days before he died I had to lie to him and tell him has lawyer was getting things squared away. I lied to my Dad so he wouldn't die from heart failure worrying about his SSD appeal, that was still laying on his lawyer's desk. The doctors knew he was upset about it and advised me to tell him everything was okay.

Think about looking your dying parent in the eyes and lying to him, trying to undo the damage and wreckage of his life, so that the truth wouldn't take what few days he had left away from him, like Reagan had taken his maybe one or two disability checks. Three weeks after his SSD claim was turned down he was dead. So SS saved the money he'd paid in for 40 years.

A man didn't need a lawyer to get his Social Security Disability, if he was too sick to work, until Reagan stepped in and fucked that up.

So now Mr. know it all, you know a bit more.

I finally came to trust Obama. I know how let down people feel, because yesterday wasn't the first time I'd heard lifelong democrats express the same disgust, that I heard on the phone yesterday. It's kind of like global warming the way I see it. The chances of fixing the economy or the environment get slimmer with each passing backroom deal with political extortionists. Is fake bipartisanship more important than this country? Are our debts abroad more important that our debts to our own elderly people? Did the old people lie to start the war in Iraq? Is it the old people's call to keep spending 4 billion a week in Iraq and Afghanistan? Did the old people raid the Social Security "TRUST" fund? Did the old people have a choice about paying into the SS "TRUST" fund? Why should the old people be the ones to suffer?

EDIT...I will vote for Obama AGAIN...I have no other sane choice. But unless he lays off of the seniors and stands uo to these republican gangsters it will make me sick to my stomach to support the man.

Try treating your lung cancer with Halls Cough Drops like my Dad did sometime.

66. How much did you pay for your crystal ball?
Good morning! I say what a joy it is to look ahead and show you the signs of your future. So much happiness is in store for you the most brilliantly lighted stars are put to shame by the brightness of your light! Oh, happiness what an elusive thing you are, but thank GOD you were born beneath this star!

Drop another coin in the slot and I will tell you more!

67. 60 years is what I've paid so far.
How much did you pay for yours? You might want to turn the antenna on yours I think your reception is a tad grainy.

Those claw feet do kind of look like mine.
