Openly Gay Recruits Begin Re-Enlisting in San Diego!
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 01:04 AM by FreeState
After being denied enlistment Friday many were finally accepted today. Great news!

http://www.10news.com/news/28516328/detail.html

EL CAJON, Calif. -- Across the country and in San Diego County, military recruiters have begun accepting applications from openly gay recruits after a court ruling several days ago and the Pentagon's decision to open up applications.

...snip...

On Friday, the Pentagon instructed the military to stop discharging gay personnel and begin accepting applications from openly gay recruits. Though "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" has not formally been repealed, a recent court decision preventing its enforcement could effectively end the policy.

Around noon, Lonagker walked in for her long-awaited moment. Minutes later, she came back out disappointed.

...snip (that was Friday, she was enlisted today!)...

Local Navy and Marine recruiters also confirmed they have begun accepting openly gay recruits during the application process.

1. See I told you so.
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 01:16 AM by Tx4obama

They just needed a day or two to contact all of the recruiting offices and get the memo out :)

Any word yet about Dan Choi re-enlisting?

Edited to add:

Looks like Choi will be in NYC Tuesday attending an award event. http://twitter.com/ltdanchoi/status/90543140976590848

Maybe he'll re-enlist while in NYC.

3. Actually they didn't - the girl in the story got a call back within 20 minutes of being refused
The military is very efficient at getting the word out. My guess is there were a couple quick calls made (the news here was there when she tried on Friday, I'm sure that sped up the process).

I've never heard Choi say he wants to re-enlist. Would not surprise me if he does though.

5. Yeah, remember when ....
the 9th declared DADT unconstitutional, right before the 'stay' was put into place - Choi went to one of the recruitment offices to enlist in a different part of the military.

I think he was in the Army originally, but he went to a Marine recruiting office in New York and filled out the papers (tons of his supporters and a couple of camera guys were there)- but then I think what happened was they told him that he didn't qualify because of his age - and then shortly after that the 'stay' was put into place so he then had to put everything on hold.

7. My guess is he's to old then
Too bad I think he made a great translator. They would be lucky to have him back.

8. I think that the Army would take him back and the age rule wouldn't apply there

The thing with the Marines was that there he would have been considered a newbie/'new recruit' and the rules regarding new recruits would have applied to him, that's where the age requirement tripped him up.

In the Army he wouldn't be considered a new recruit - it would be a 're-enlistment' in that branch of the military.

I guess time will tell - but I am hoping he will re-enlist.

14. Question...
What is Choi's arrest record since he has been out in the civilian world?

16. Good question. Here's a link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Choi#2010_arrests

There is a section there on the link above for 2010 and 2011.

Looks like one time the charge was dropped. Another arrested doesn't say outcome.
And the arrest overseas doesn't say outcome.

11. Here's the video from Oct 2010

In the video he says that he was too old for the Marines but he DID re-enlist in the Army

So, I wonder if the paperwork from 2010 is still valid.

6. Obama's approach to ending DADT has been vindicated
He did it the way it needed to be done to get it passed, and to make sure that the new law will stick.

But then again, that's why he is the president and we are pecking away on computers on a message board.

9. How so?
Edited on Tue Jul-12-11 01:33 AM by FreeState
These enlistments are a result of the Court. While I thank all involved, including Obama, if the court did not rule it would be fall at the earliest that open GLB persons could enlist. (Note the fight is not over even when DADT is dead and gone as there is a letter missing from that acronym T - we still need to fix that).

12. Obama's "approach" was to fight for DADT.
And to direct the Department of Justice to fight attempts to dismantle DADT. Is that some of that 11-dimensional chess he is playing?

13. That is not true. Obama's strategy was to have Congress 'permanently' repeal DADT

It's not Obama's fault that some folks don't understand that sometimes in the legal system some motions have to be filed even when you don't want to file them.

Obama's strategy and actions have always shown that he was for Congress repealing DADT - repealing DADT via legislation which is more permanent than just a Court Order.
