That's how it looks to me. I read TPM yesterday and Josh wondered why Obama did not just say "if we don't raise the debt limit, no social security benefits". So, this morning he said it. I bet the GOP congress critters' and senators' phones lit up as if on fire with beneficiaries saying "lift the damned debt ceiling and do it now."

For what happens next? McConnell and Grover Nordquist say "let Obama lift the debt ceiling."

When for the last year plus all we've heard is "we will never lift the debt ceiling." Sure, it is a chicken shit way to do it, but they definately caved.

2. Why should we suffer because he's a bad leader?

Why not just pledge to resign if you can't get a deal on the debt and deficit, and pass a stop gap deficit ceiling measure? The Republicans should have the same happen to them.

If they can't get a deal done, let someone come in and try again. And keep doing this until there's a deal.

Oh I know why, it would be his/their ass(es) the line, not everyone else's.

3. you talking about the GOP?
I don't see this as Obama's failure at all. In fact, I think he won big (although I too would have liked to see some reform...ie higher taxes, that was never going to happen as long as the GOP controls one house.)

They can play with our lives, but I bet they'd never put their asses really on the line.

5. Read the details of their "cave". That wasn't something they scribbled
down in haste. At the very least, this was a pre-planned position, and it wouldn't surprise me if all of this is a series of pre-arranged tableaux.

8. I read them, and I agree, they were waiting in the wings with this
as evidenced by the fact that Nordquist backed it so quickly.

I'm sure Obama would have rather had the kind of votes Bush got (bipartisan) the seven times they lifted the debt limit while W was in office but the way the vote was going this time it would not have been bipartisan.

The GOP "wins" because they don't "have to vote" (they will have to vote to give the prez the power to lift it alone) and Obama wins because the limit is lifted.

Yes, it was game playing but we din't cave...this time.

10. This is a crappy "deal". I wouldn't call it a win for the Dems and
I'd be surprised if they accept it.

9. they didn't cave. they puked another blowhard propostition.
this would allow the thugs to beat the shit out of Obama 'His' debt limit blah blah blah...meanwhile they can tell their base and the teafuckers that they did NOT vote for a debt increase.

it's the most cynical of politics.

13. didn't take long
this spin is from Freeperville saying Obama has admitted:

The “trust fund” is a bunch of non-marketable intragovernmental IOUs. They are utterly and irredeemably financially meaningless. There never has been a trust fund....Trust fund, contributions, lockbox, benefits, trustee, etc. are just words that have been used deliberately since the time of FDR to deceive people about the true nature of SS, which is in truth a ponzi scheme structured on the basis of intergenerational theft.

Pubies are going to try and frame it as Obama claiming SS is broke while insinuating the money was spent on his watch. Betcha.
