7. Title IX was one of the most liberating laws for women
http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/usa-3-france-1-how-us-victory-could-be-game-changer
<snip>

The 1999 World Cup here was a revelation, not only to the US, but to the world – sold-out stadiums, big television ratings, and women’s sports pushed to new heights.

In short, it was contagious. The virtues of Title IX, the American law that mandates equal spending on men’s and women’s sporting programs at public schools, got an international airing.

“The lessons of Title IX have filtered around the world to varying degrees in the past decade,” writes Sports Illustrated’s Ann Killion. “Countries that routinely ignored their women's teams have directed resources, energy, and a certain amount of pride toward their women's teams.”

Fuck Michelle Bachmann and the other morons!!

5. Still recovering from Sunday's extra-long and emotional game.
France had an extra day of rest since they played Saturday. When I played sports back in the day we called it "dead legs".

10. Ted was a key part of Title IX
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=4424129
<snip>
"As his leadership in the Senate grew, his responsibility for ensuring that Title IX remained strong and enforced grew. He became the chief force behind the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987, which virtually re-enacted Title IX after a devastating, narrow Supreme Court decision, which among other things removed Title IX coverage from all intercollegiate athletics in this country."

Kennedy was part of a group that included Sen. Birch Bayh, D-Ind., and Rep. Patsy Mink, D-Hawaii, who advocated early for Title IX, and his role expanded later as the legislation's great protector. Greenberger contends that Title IX might not have survived without Kennedy's guardianship, and thus the sports world as it is today might be vastly different.

I have too many text books that lay out Teddy's role in this one.

11. Title IX rocked a lot of men's sports into oblivion.
Its goals were and are laudable, but the mechanism used to achieve them was so ham-fisted that what we are now seeing is more opportunity for women in sports at the direct expense of men whose sports are no longer financially/legally feasible. Room for both celebration and remorse here.
