The Republican Pledge Fetish

Conservatives abhor the passage of time or the emergence of novelty—anything that requires movement from now and here and likeness of character. Conservatism is more aversion than ideology; conservatives are not for nearly as much as they’re against because there are many more ways to be different from them than to be their kin.

We must save all these Republican pledges for posterity. The day will come when they will be classed with the rants of Julius Streicher in Der Sturmer and the text of the Jim Crow laws as among the saddest written memorials to ignorance and avarice ever penned by man.

1. I like when the pledges contain assertions of facts

That's obviously not what a pledge is. I'm thinking of course about the "black families were more stable under slavery than Obama" statement that was in one of Bachmann's pledges.
