Poll question: Trying to get a clear view of our priorities: Cut SS/Medicare or not?
Edited on Thu Jul-14-11 01:54 PM by Doctor_J
Apparently the president won the theater battle by scolding Cantor. But to get back to the point of the discussions

I edited option 1

4. As Krugman points out today, the cuts the president has already conceded to
are more than even the average REPUBLICAN voter wants. So play dumb if you like, but you'll have to face the truth at some point.

19. We'll see what he finally does.
If he pushes cuts to SS and/or Medicare, he will lose my vote.

Clear enough for you?

34. Is that the line in the sand?
It's your vote, waste it if you choose to. But it doesn't make sense to carp on what isn't happening.

35. I am pretty sure I wasted my vote last time
as heartbreaking as it is to admit, the only thing different is the rate at which we're turning into a 3rd world country. And since, as has already been pointed out, the president has already offered more concessions than I'm comfortable with, the end result will not be to my liking.

8. Me too. It seems like supporters are trying to make yesterday's
stage show out to be an indication that the prez is trying to reel the discussion back to our side. I don't really see it, but this poll is a different thing altogether.

looking under the table for WMD. ABout par for the course for the Village Idiot, but rally sad coming from a Dem that I gave money to.

11. Because Dem voters would not accept this from a Repuke president
but from a (D), they will. It's the same way with teachers' union members.

15. Social Security and Medicare are some the last things
that we should even consider trying to cut out of the Federal Budget. I am truly amazed that they are even theoretically on the table.

20. SS has never contributed a single penny to the deficit
what's more, the "Waste fraud and corruption" in Medicare and SS are dwarfed by those in private industry. So your sound bite isn't reality-based.

27. Maybe, but I don't think cutting peoples' benefits will help.
Nor will raising the elligibility age from 65 to 67

31. I didn't mean lowering the quality or quantity or care
I meant cutting the cost to deliver the care.

Once that's accomplished, we can look at either expanding it or keeping it solvent for longer.

36. But Obama has already offered to raise the eligibility age,
and joked about cutting benefits (but not "slashing", which Carney and the press corpse found hilarious). So they're not thinking about "first getting rid of fraud and waste".

37. That is even more true of the Pentagon.
And the Pentagon Budget directly affects the Deficit.

SS has nothing to do with the Fed. Budget since it is a separate fund. Why are we not hearing all this outrage over what actually does affect the Fed. Budget?? Why is SS even being mentioned, and so often, in this debate?

We, the people, who pay into SS, are creditors of the Fed. Gov. They OWE US. We are one of a list of creditors, like China eg. So why are we being talked about as if we were debtors?

42. It's true of a lot of agencies - regardless of how it's funded.
my point is, how can we even talk about what & how much to cut when we can't get a fair assessment on how well we're delivering the services we're supposed to be delivering. Two trillion dollars missing from the Pentagon? Then we should be able to cut it by at least that much & still get what we know we've been paying for.

One thing I know for sure: privitization is not the solution - it'll just make it easier to steal from taxpayers.

SS/Medicare/Medicaid should be completely off the table.
