Since June 1, when civil union licenses have been available in Illinois, more than 950 couples have obtained them in Cook County, with the majority being female couples.
Of those licenses, 831 were issued in the first month, and an additional 125 through Friday, July 15, according to a release from the County Clerk’s office.
Those applying for civil unions have ranged in age from 18 to 93, and have included some, but not many, opposite-sex couples. About a quarter of the unions have been presided over by a religious officiant, a report from the clerk’s office said. About $36,000 in new revenues have been collected from fees associated with the licenses.
June 1, the first day civil union licenses were available, was also the busiest day, according to the release. There were 209 licenses issued that day. From June 2-30, an average of 30 licenses were issued daily.
