Ezra Klein: The Gang of Six's plan: Better than we're likely to do otherwise
The Gang of Six's plan: Better than we're likely to do otherwise

This from the guy who went on MSNBC last night to declare that the President will cave!

What a joke!

2. So basically, it's Simpson-Bowles plus COLA cuts for SS and big cuts to Medicare
Edited on Tue Jul-19-11 05:42 PM by leveymg
No increase in corporate taxes. The top rate stays at 29 percent. The middle-class takes a huge hit in deductibles.

All in all, it looks a lot like the Simpson-Bowles plan, which was pretty much the point of the exercise . . . What's also interesting is that we're effectively seeing something of a do-over. Simpson-Bowles didn't really get the support of any of the senators on the committee. They all said they wanted to make changes. Now, they have. Many politicians — a number of them on the right — blasted President Obama for dismissing the Simpson-Bowles plan rather than making it his own. In remarks this afternoon, he said the Gang of Six's product is "consistent" with his principles and made it pretty clear that if the House and Senate agree on a variant of this plan, he'll sign it. So what we have here is a bipartisan deficit-reduction plan that hits the $4 trillion target — or at least gets very close — and carries presidential support. Now we find out if such a thing can actually pass.

This is Hope and Change? Both sides holding the federal government hostage to produce this abomination. This is just an attack on what's left of the American middle-class so that the very wealthy and their global banks and multinational corporations can keep what they have already grabbed. They can stick it.

3. Right now the top rate for those making over $250,000. is 35%
It was 39% under Clinton. Obama swore he would not allow those rates to stay the same or go lopwer. This Gang of Six apparently is suggesting that the rates not only not go back up to what they were before Bush* came along but to lower them another 10%... Progressive Taxation is being done away with under our very eyes...Under a Democratic Administration to boot.

4. Our President has embarked on a very clever gambit. Have faith. Ask no questions. In the end,
you will find he has outfoxed them all even though appearances will suggest he hasn't, but he will have, and you will understand all at the appointed future date. All Hail!

21. I stand corrected. No wonder America is broke and broken. This next step is to break our will to
resist the final stages of takeover and shakedown.

If this actually comes to pass as The Grand Deal, everything changes.

29. Progressive Taxation helped the USA grow in the 20th century
I suppose the globalists want it gone so that they can prosper.

7. Obviously, it's not. It's Reagan's plan to revamp Social Security, called something else.
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

But the same can be said of a pile of horseshit!

9. He always says this stuff, btw.
Yesterday he said that the McYertle 4-Debt Ceiling Plan with a permanent Dubya tax cuts for fake S-corp "small businesses", some with $30 Billion in revenue like Bechtel, was going to be the best we could get.

If Obama just threatens them to invoke the 14th Amendment--even if he doesn't do it--will give us the revenues we need.
Hint, hint!

I meant that he's right that it's the Catfood Commission proposal, but I think we can do better.

What's your opinion on the "Gang of Six" proposal?

A bit of consensus gathering without any political support. A show. Level 5 in the 8th Dimensional Chess game. Now we're at 13.

Finally dawning on you? This is what Obama wanted all along.

24. Yeah,
how could I forget. Do you remember that the proposal failed to pass? Do you remember that Andy Stern, one of the members chosen by the President, opposed the final draft.

Remember?

25. Fundamental question: have we been deceived, or did we just deceive ourselves that
this sort of outcome wasn't inevitable after Q3 '08?

The Gang of Six's plan: Better than we're likely to do otherwise
By Ezra Klein

Let's start with what's in the Gang of Six's plan (pdf) — or at least what we know is in it.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/the-gang-of-sixs-plan-better-than-were-likely-to-do-otherwise/2011/07/19/gIQAXjZROI_blog.html

All in all, it looks a lot like the Simpson-Bowles plan, which was pretty much the point of the exercise. A few weeks ago, I wrote a column arguing that, in retrospect, the Simpson-Bowles plan was a pretty good deal: It was more balanced on both the spending and the tax side than the president's April deficit-reduction proposal. I think that it is, if anything, truer now than it was then, and truer in this bill than it was in that bill. This bill, for instance, appears to jettison the Simpson-Bowles recommendation that tax revenues be capped at 21 percent of GDP.

I'm not entirely sold on his analysis, but he comes out and says it in the headline and in the body of the post.

17. Well, that was really wierd. I looked up and down three times and even used the
find function on my browser and couldn't find it.

But now it's there after clicking through to your link to the actual article, rather than the blog front. Thanks.

19. Maybe, I don't know. It was taking a long time to load the page so maybe
it just needed more time than I gave it because all I was getting each time is the "Reconciliation" headline and excerpt and next the "The Gang of Six’s framework" one. It wasn't even in the latest posts sidebar.

Oh well, prolly just a loading hiccup or something. Who knows

As for the Klein article, I really have no comment as I need to brush up on Simpson-Bowles after, what, a year plus since it was daily fare.

26. This Is Simply A LOAD OF CRAP!! And A DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT Looks
to be SURRENDERING "we the people" for WHAT?? I've been vocal about my disappointment, loud and clear for quite some time!

Now I'm MORE THAN OUTRAGED! And for ANYONE HERE, ANYONE to say this is somehow THE BEST HE CAN DO, must be some kind of NUTS!

I won't even say out loud HERE what I'm really thinking because I KNOW there are too many here who have also sold out and will have me TS'd!

So be it, but this is just too much! It's been leaning this way for a very, very long time and each time there are MORE EXCUSES. What the hell is wrong, just what the hell is wrong that WE MUST have this kind of CRAP shoved up our asses?

I'm logging off and going to stick my head in the sand, along with so many others! Guess I can find something STUPID to watch on TV because right now I STILL HAVE A DISH! Must be some old re-runs of Everybody Loves Raymond or something! It's all I can stand for right now! At least I'll actually be laughing at something that's REALLY funny, as opposed to laughing AT something that's REALLY horrible!

INSANE, just INSANE!
