Florida Now Third Worst State for Toxic Air Pollution!!!
http://docs.nrdc.org/air/files/air_11072001a.pdf

A new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council ranks Florida as third worst state for toxic air. Primary sources are coal and oil fired electric plants and including Progress Energy. The power plants emitted 33.4 million pounds of harmful chemicals!!

My how progressive! You must go to the link to view the report. Keep scrolling, there is lots of data and colored charts.

So far, only the pdf file is available.

1. Thanks for the k&r, keep it up, this needs to get out, Florida is the 4th largest state.
If they get away with it in Florida, they will cut into the air quality just as they are lowering water quality as I type.

2. You can do it! You can pass Texas and Louisiana!

Just start drilling in the Gulf! Drill, baby, drill! :sarcasm:

edit: Oh, I see. That's just for toxic pollution from the electric sector, hence coal-fired states like OH and PA at the top. For overall toxic, vaguely metallic-tasting air, it's gonna be tough to beat the petrochemical industries along the central Gulf Coast.

8. I find it hard to believe any state could pass Louisiana.
the people that live around all those chemical factories don't look black or white: they look GREEN.

9. But most of the ones who live right near the chemical factories are black.
It's called "ecoracism", and is hardly confined to La.; Anniston, Ala. is another prime example.

3. Well, it's not like they could take advantage of alternative energy sources
Wind, solar, tidal energy are totally inappropriate for Florida, after all.

13. Are you crazy?
If they were energy independent then all the SS and pension money that flows to the retirees there would stay there. And the tourist dollars. As it is, they send all their energy money out of state and keep W Virginia and Texas in the red.

5. I remember driving to work early in the A.M. at times and seeing the plumes coming
off the plant near Riviera beach. I thought, hmmmm, howcome I don't see that during the day?? Then I thought about the album Midnight Oil.... and I thought how appropriate.

11. But it's not enough to kill 19 million people over night, or even in the near future.
So what's the big deal?

We all have to die of something.

Right?

Maybe I'll just move to a state with only 27 million pounds of emissions and that'll make me feel so much better.
